2. He vows to free Marienne — but in the morning.
3. He takes strong sleeping pills, and then falls into an intense dream state.
4. The nightmare begins when Joe seemingly returns to the cage to release Marienne, but the keycode is not working and she’s suddenly going into anaphylactic shock from the coffee he gave her — and Joe doesn’t know where the key is.

This is where Love comes in. In a string of hallucinations, Joe’s ex-wife appears, reading Rhys’s memoir in Joe’s bookstore-edition glass cage. She calls out his pattern of violence with women and reminds him that *everyone* he claims to love and protect ends up dead.

We know she’s one of the few, if only, people who put genuine fear into Joe. She played the ideal contrast to his lead and exemplified that in the three-minute scene-stealing moment.

• It’s exactly why Joe became weary of her when she was alive.
• She was his equal in a way no one else was.
• In a fitting return, Love is the one in this hallucination who breaks Joe.
• Instead of handing him the key to free Marienne as he had hoped, Love is seen giving him a gun to symbolize that there’s only one way out.

As she explains, “Somebody does need to die for this to end.” It’s the first time we ever see Joe reach this point, a self-reflection where he finally realizes he’s the problem (shout out to the eventual Taylor Swift “Anti-Hero” song overlay in the next episode).

It was so believable that Joe even thought he was a separate person until it turned out that he actually murdered the real Rhys in an attempt to find Marienne – as he didn’t realise he was the real reason Marienne went missing. Joe later continues his killing spree of characters including Kate’s dad and billionaire Tom Lockwood before eventually attempting to take his own life. However, he later wakes up in the hospital after he was rescued and admits his wrongdoings to Kate, who decides to accept his monstrous past and the trail of murders he managed to worm himself out of. And that’s good on one hand, because it means we’ve made this thing in a compelling enough way that that’s what it does. But the show is most valuable when you’re under Joe’s spell and you’re watching it, again, as more as an exploration of us, rather than just about him.” After part 1 of the Netflix hit’s fourth season premiered in February, viewers were led to believe that Badgley’s character — formerly Joe, now Jonathan Moore — had jetted off to London to begin a new life as a better person before the Eat the Rich Killer, unveiled as Rhys Montrose ( Ed Speelers ), began killing his friends.

It’s one thing to have to justify killing one or two ex-girlfriends, and it is quite another to walk into a season with a minimum of 10 murders under your belt.” Gamble noted that the show began weaving in Joe’s hallucinations back in season 1, adding that by season 3, “he had a fever, and the inner monologue became a whole separate Joe that was sitting there, taunting him.” While Joe eventually attempted to kill himself by jumping off a bridge in the final episode of season 4, he survived the fall and pledged to start a new life with girlfriend Kate ( Charlotte Ritchie ).

As always, trouble is lurking around the corner for Joe. Following the path of Stranger Things and Ozark, You Season 4 is being split down the middle and released in two parts by Netflix.

The first part, made up of 5 episodes, sets the stage for more chaos than this show has ever seen. Unfortunately, those expectations are never met, A murder mystery is the main focus of You Season 4 Part 1, yet it’s a convoluted issue to resolve. Joe doesn’t seem particularly inspired to investigate the murder itself, and all the prime suspects are evil people with ulterior motives.

This includes London’s “It girl” Lady Phoebe (Tilly Keeper), her pompous boyfriend Adam (Lukas Gage), the tone-deaf Gemma (Eve Austin), the privileged Connie (Dario Coates), Nigerian princess Blessing (Ozioma Whenu), and the famous author Rhys (Ed Speleers). This is expected from a whodunit, but what’s really missing is any relatable character to help the audience empathize with this puzzle.

That emotional link to the murder mystery is nowhere to be found here, leaving an apathetic detective (who’s also a killer himself) to deal with people who don’t care about the case anyways. Netflix’s You has been compared to Showtime’s Dexter before, however, that comparison is far too kind now. Penn Badgley in ‘You’ Season 4 courtesy of Netflix Sophie (Niccy Lin) and Simon (Aidan Cheng) are two of the suspects Joe has to investigate in order to get to the bottom of the murder mystery in You Season 4. Sophie is an influencer who dedicates her time to obtaining sponsorship deals, while Simon is a painter who doesn’t get along with people who aren’t like himself.

They are siblings, and Sophie is usually the one who socializes as Simon is disrespectful to everyone he’s introduced to, especially Joe. The pair are clearly hiding something outside of their questionable paintings. These siblings are part of the thematic argument Joe must tackle in the first half of You Season 4 dealing with extreme wealth and how it corrupts people.

Goldberg is heard during his constant voiceover narration condemning the nepotism seen in the group he is introduced to by Malcolm. It’s amusing how the Netflix series displays Joe respecting and even admiring his Gen Z students and their beliefs. This is most seen with Amy-Leigh Hickman’s Nadia as she takes up the role of professor Jonathan Moore’s closest student mentee.

• Through this relationship, it’s never been more transparent how relatable co-creator and showrunner Sera Gamble tries to make Joe seem before reminding the audience that he solves his problems by making people disappear.
• Joe’s voiceover narration has always been one of the strongest aspects of You, and it’s a fundamental way for the viewer to be able to follow such a morally complex character.

While it’s understandable why You has relied on it so much this far, with the Netflix original being based on the popular book series by author Caroline Kepnes, the narration here in Season 4 becomes a little too repetitive and dull for its own good.

With the overarching themes of wealth, fame, and greed, the overuse of narration feels like an excuse to not make an effort to let the plot move forward through the show’s visual language. The monotone lines end up delivering exposition constantly instead of displaying Joe’s internal struggles. It’s almost as if this Netflix show has started to wear out its unique style and approach in favor of something that’s simply passable.

Charlotte Ritchie, who joins the series as Kate, is the highlight of You Season 4 regarding the latest members of the show’s revolving cast ensemble. Kate is an art gallery director in a romantic arrangement with Malcolm at the start of the story. She is the biggest challenge Joe has to face this time around, with the new character putting the police on his deadly trail and having an overprotective friend in Roald played by Ben Wiggins, who’s fond of old-school activities like hunting. This was a pivotal climax for the Netflix series, but Love’s absence is severely felt in the first half of You Season 4.

Without his (also) evil counterpart, Joe is lacking a force equal to his sinister capabilities, leaving a vacuum that doesn’t help the convoluted mystery at the center of this story. Tati Gabrielle’s Marienne is not even featured in these first 5 episodes as much as one would think, as she’s mainly just seen in flashbacks.

It’s an odd decision considering where the show previously left off. With a convoluted mystery, an excess of tiresome voiceover narration, and a protagonist who’s not fully engaged with the plot of his own show, You delivers a disappointing first part to its new season.

Not even Penn Badgley’s best efforts can help Joe Goldberg take the lead in his own story. From bookstore manager in New York to shop clerk in LA to loving suburban husband, perhaps putting the conniving stalker/serial killer in the middle of a whodunit overseas wasn’t the best way to push the show’s genre-bending narrative forward.

Sera Gamble has credited this idea to fellow co-creator and executive producer Greg Berlanti, and to be fair, You has always proved to be unpredictable in its latter episodes. Hopefully, the second part of You Season 4, which will be released a month from now on March 9th, will vastly improve this latest run of Netflix’s psychological thriller series.

The Frame Job – Image via Netflix To find the perfect suspect to pin the blame for the Eat-the-Rich murders, Joe keeps buzzing around the Oxford friendship group. By talking to Lady Phoebe ( Tilly Keeper ), Joe discovers Connie ( Dario Coates ) doesn’t have an alibi for the murders, making him the perfect candidate for the frame job.

And after meeting Connie for lunch, Joe even convinces himself that sending the poor man to prison might do him some good. Connie has a history of drug abuse and seems to have hit rock bottom. So, while it might hurt to be convicted of crimes he didn’t commit, taking time to clean up and rethink his life could be good for Connie.

Besides that, no one would really miss him. While scouting possible candidates, Joe gets a disturbing message from Rhys, who left a gift on his fridge. When Joe gets home, he finds Simon’s severed ear, which Rhys wants to use to frame whoever should fall for the murders.

2. Ate is selling Simon’s artwork to kickstart her own charity company, and while she’s still angry at Joe for pushing her away, Lady Phoebe is eager to invite him to the party.

Unfortunately for Joe, after their lunch, Connie decided to turn his life around for the better. He subscribed to a rehab program and decided to clear his head and find a way to help people with his money. After Connie’s apparent recovery, Joe feels guilty about framing him for the murders.

4. And when everyone is distracted, the woman tells Lady Phoebe the killer is nearby and that she must be escorted right away to a safe place.

The woman, named Dawn, is a delusion fan of Lady Phoebe, who imagines they are best friends, even though they’ve never met before. Dawn wants to keep Lady Phoebe safe and kidnaps her to protect her friend from the Eat-the-Rich killer. Once she realizes Dawn is unstable, Lady Phoebe convinces the woman to let her go.

The resolution to this dire conflict only comes when Joe finds out where Dawn keeps Lady Phoebe. Lady Phoebe convinces Dawn to let Joe inside the locked room, threatening to break their imaginary friendship. And once Joe is inside, he rips off the band-aid and tells Dawn she needs psychiatric help, as the supposed friendship is a symptom of a pathological obsession.

While Joe is distracting Dawn, Lady Phoebe overpowers the woman and takes off her knife. Meanwhile, Joe plants Simon’s ear inside Dawn’s bag, framing her for the Eat-the-Rich murders. Dawn is guilty of kidnapping Lady Phoebe anyway and needs medical treatment.
