This week will mark the 25th career appearance at the Masters for Woods, and he’s been open about the end potentially approaching soon. “I don’t know how many more I have in me,” Woods told reporters on Tuesday. “I know more guys on the Champions Tour than I do the regular tour.” There’s no indication that Woods is thinking about retirement right now, but the 47-year-old has a lot of miles on his body at this point.
He is seeking his first victory since the ZOZO Championship in October 2019. Last year’s Masters was the only PGA Tour event Woods made the cut at. He opened with a solid 71 before posting back-to-back rounds of 78 on Saturday and Sunday to finish plus-13 and in 47th place. McIlroy will likely be a sentimental favorite this weekend as he looks to complete the career Grand Slam.
The 33-year-old had a spectacular Sunday last year with a 64 to finish seven-under overall in second place, three shots behind Scheffler. It was the best finish for McIlroy at Augusta National after missing the cut in 2021. He has finished in the top 10 seven times since 2014, including in the top five three times in the past five years.
Scheffler, who is the top player in the official world golf rankings, has a lot of momentum on his side. The Texas native is coming off a five-shot win at the Players Championship last month. Another strong candidate to win this weekend is Jon Rahm. He had to withdraw from the Players Championship before the second round due to a stomach illness, but he’s been terrific with three wins already this season.
The year’s first major will begin early Thursday morning and wrap up on Sunday afternoon, with one player immortalized by winning arguably the most prestigious tournament in golf.
