Regardless of the time of year, Peter Parker awakes to begin his working day in darkness. Rising shortly after 3.30am, breakfast and a shower is followed by the trip to his delivery office in Westbury-on-Trym, a northern suburb of the city. Mr Parker and his colleagues spend the next four hours sorting through thousands of letters to arrange them into the appropriate routes – or “walks” – carried out by various postman.
And at about 8.30am, he sets out on his route, whether it is in sunshine, sleet or snow. Over the next five hours he will deliver post to up to 600 addresses, carrying bags weighing about 16kg over a distance of some five miles. ‘Rewarding job’ Despite the unconventional working hours, and the physical toil of the job in often unfavourable weather, Mr Parker insists he enjoys his work. Royal Mail is the nation’s biggest deliverer of mail The 39-year-old postman of three years, whose past jobs included roles in the Army and catering, said: “On the whole, I’ve got a rewarding job. I love my job, I really do. “When you walk around you find people actually do like you.
- Elderly people are really friendly.
- Sometimes I’m one of the only people they see.” And, touching on the positive aspects of his working life and the idiosyncratic lifestyle it creates, he went on: “I get up early but I’ve done half my day by the time most people are getting up and I have the afternoon to myself.
“I’m out in the open and I can control the pace that I work at, which means I have freedom. And it keeps me fit. If I had a normal nine-to-five I’d be the size of a house.”

Although Mr Parker said he could see both sides of the argument in the dispute between postal workers and their employers, he said ultimately he believed it was right to take industrial action. “We had to stand firm – it’s a point of principle,” he said. Mr Parker argued that the nature of his work meant he should earn more than the 253.19 per week, after tax and pensions, that he was paid. He also explained his stance by criticising what he said was the direction Royal Mail was being steered at boardroom level. “There is obviously an agenda for us to be privatised. And the government don’t care,” said the postman. “People like Adam Crozier don’t think about the social element of what we do. We aren’t a business, we’re a public service. But we aren’t being treated as a public service. “Managers see it as a business, but postmen refer to it as a service.”
