Many stores will no longer take cash for major purchases of iPhones or Macs.

If you need something special added, that will take some time to get the parts and put them together, and smaller store may not carry high-end configurations at all. Most MacBook pro memory and some drives are soldered to the mainboard, so “adding memory” now means literally ordering a different model – they cannot add that stuff in the store.

Other ways to get your Mac configured specially is to order online for delivery in store, to order online for delivery to your door (provided someone can sign for the delivery during the day, or if they just leave it, packages do not get stolen off your doorstep).

Is the iPhone 15 going to be worth it?

It really does feel like only the finest of margins separates the higher-end iPhone models from those aimed at everyday consumers. That’s my big takeaway after spending several days with the new lineup, which includes the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

• Don’t get me wrong: There are a handful of improvements on the Pro models that an enthusiast like myself would be hard-pressed to give up, from the more advanced camera system to the ProMotion high-refresh-rate display.
• But for consumers who’d rather save a few hundred dollars, it’s hard to find fault with the basic iPhone 15.

Want to text your family and friends? Clip digital coupons while grocery shopping? Scroll through Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X? Unwind with a podcast or audiobook? Avoid traffic on the way to Grandma’s house? Gasp, make a phone call? The iPhone 15 does as good a job as the Pro models in everyday scenarios like those.

1. While the headline feature this year is the USB-C charging port, there’s a bit more to unpack on the iPhone 15 beyond saying bye-bye to the Lightning cord.
2. Below, we’ll explain what’s new and give our early impressions on the full lineup.
3. The two models aimed at everyday consumers, the 6.1-inch iPhone 15 and 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus, start at $799 and $899, respectively.

Both are available in five colors: blue, pink, yellow, green, and black. Beyond the difference in size, the two phones are virtually identical, so which one is right for you largely comes down to preference. I will say that I switched from the iPhone XS to the 14 Pro Max a year ago (in part to have better battery life) and got used to the larger size in a few days.

In any event, the biggest change for most consumers will likely be that USB-C port that replaces the Lightning port that first appeared on the iPhone 5 in 2012. So what does that mean? You’ll find a USB-C cable in the box with the phone, but the power adapter needed to plug the device into a standard electrical outlet is not included.

So, if you don’t already own one made for a laptop or tablet, you may have to buy one. Apple sells them starting at $19, but you can find them at other retailers for less, I own a 2020 MacBook Air, so I was able to charge the iPhone 15 using the power adapter made for my laptop.

What do you as a consumer “get” from the transition to USB-C, other than, potentially, having to buy new cables for your home, office, car, and so on? Eh, not much. Before the iPhone 15 was officially introduced, there was speculation that the move to USB-C might lead to faster data transfer speeds. And that’s still true, but not for the standard iPhone 15, which relays data at Lightning-like speeds (technically, 480 megabits per second).

That’s somewhat slow by today’s standards, especially when you’re transferring photos and videos to your Mac for editing. If you do that often, it makes sense to consider stepping up to one of the Pro models, which transfer data at up to 10 gigabits per second (more than 20 times faster).

• The other big addition to the iPhone 15 is the Dynamic Island feature that debuted on last year’s iPhone 14 Pro.
• The pill-shaped interactive widget replaces the static “notch” found on every model dating back to the iPhone X.
• Mobile apps can use the space to display weather alerts, sports scores, the name and number for an incoming phone call, timer countdowns, and more.

While it probably won’t revolutionize the way you use your phone, it’s a handy feature to have and nice to see it become available to more people. Lastly, Apple has upgraded the main camera from 12 to 48 megapixels. This is nice on paper, but I’m not sure how much it will impact folks who, say, simply use the camera to snap photos for Instagram or group chats on iMessage.

The photos I took using the iPhone 15 (and 15 Pro Max) look great to my untrained eye (we officially evaluate image quality in our labs). But, if you’re the type of person who likes to edit your photos using apps like Adobe Lightroom, the additional pixels will come in handy. Note that ProMotion, the high-refresh-rate display tech that originated on the iPhone 13 Pro and the always-on display, are still exclusive to the Pro.

I missed ProMotion the most while using the iPhone 15. That’s probably because I’ve used a high-refresh-rate computer monitor for about 10 years and have gotten used to that level of fluidity when scrolling through content. At the same time, it’s hard to miss what you’ve never experienced, so as long as you’re not going from a 13 Pro or 14 Pro, I don’t think you’ll mind.

As I mentioned earlier, I own an iPhone 14 Pro Max. Using it alongside the 15 Pro Max (and 15 Pro), it’s hard to notice significant differences. That’s not to say there aren’t any distinctions, but they’re small enough that I’m pretty sure I’ll be holding off on upgrading this year (even if I can get $650 by trading in my phone with Apple).

The 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro starts at $999, while the 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Pro Max starts at $1,199. Both are available in four somewhat subdued colors: what Apple calls Natural Titanium (slate gray), Blue Titanium, White Titanium, and Black Titanium. And, as you might have guessed by the name, the Pro models are made of titanium rather than aluminum.

That makes them lighter than the 14 Pros but not dramatically so. If you were to hold one in each hand with your eyes closed, you’d have a tough time identifying them. The clear leap from last year’s phones appears in the new camera system, at least on the 15 Pro Max. Whereas the 14 Pro models topped out at 3x telephoto zoom, the 15 Pro Max offers 5x.

It’s a pretty dramatic difference, one that should make it easier to take photos of everything from faraway mountain tops to your children playing sports after school. Additional photos taken with the 15 Pro Max can be found here, Note that the 5x telephoto zoom is exclusive to the 15 Pro Max; the one on the 15 Pro stops at 3x.

So, if you’re the type of person who needs the iPhone with the best camera possible, this is the first time in a few years that you have to go with the larger Pro Max. Also unique to the 15 Pro models is a new button on the side of the device where the mute switch used to be. For years, many people simply turned that switch “on,” never to push it again.

So Apple turned it into what it calls the Action button. By default, this button will mute the phone, but it can also be programmed to perform any number of other tasks, like opening the camera app, turning on the flashlight, and triggering an iOS Shortcut.

1. Shortcuts are perhaps an underappreciated feature in iOS that lets you automate certain tasks.
2. Here, you might press the Action button to trigger a Shortcut that tells your WiFi-connected garage door to open as you pull into the driveway or to turn on your Apple TV and smart lights to get ready for some serious relaxing.

Are people going to rush out to upgrade for the Action button? Probably not, but I personally think it shows Apple at its best, taking the little-used mute switch and turning it into a blank canvas for you to experiment with. I used the full iPhone 15 lineup for about a week and came away largely impressed.

Or maybe “satisfied” is the better word. Odds are you already know how the iPhone fits into your life. It’s your alarm clock every morning. You use it to listen to podcasts or your favorite playlist on the way to work. Maybe you use Apple Pay to pay for lunch. Your family group chat wonders what’s for dinner and you offer to pick up groceries on the way home.

Every now and then, you get a notification from Facebook alerting you to a fun farmers market or the Like you got on your #NoFilter photo on Instagram. And oh, look: Elon is tweeting again. You’d have to go back a long time to find an iPhone that couldn’t handle those sorts of tasks with ease.

1. That’s why I think most consumers interested in upgrading their phone this year should focus on the standard iPhone 15 models.
2. At least, that’s my impression so far, pending any surprises from our test results.
3. Yes, the iPhone 15 Pro models add a few extra features that enhance the overall experience, most notably the 5x zoom on the Pro Max and ProMotion display on both, but my guess is that most consumers won’t miss not having them.

The same goes for the Action button: a neat differentiator, sure, but probably not vital to your life. Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 15 now has the Dynamic Island, finally putting to rest the static “notch” that has existed since the iPhone X. The model is lighter than the Pro, comes in more colors (which admittedly may not matter as much once you add a case), and has a camera system that’s sure to impress your friends on Instagram and TikTok. • An Apple I reportedly sold for US$50,000 at auction in 1999.
• In 2008, the website Vintage Computing and Gaming reported that Apple I owner Rick Conte was looking to sell his unit and was “expecting a price in excess of $15,000 U.S.” The site later reported Conte had donated the unit to the Maine Personal Computer Museum in 2009.
• A unit was sold in September 2009 for $17,480 on eBay.
• A unit belonging to early Apple Computer engineers Dick and Cliff Huston was sold on March 23, 2010, for $42,766 on eBay.
• In November 2010, an Apple I sold for £133,250 ($210,000) at Christie’s auction house in London. The high price was likely due to the rare documents and packaging offered in the sale in addition to the computer, including the original packaging (with the return label showing Steve Jobs’s parents’ address, the original Apple Computer Inc “headquarters” being their garage), a personally typed and signed letter from Jobs (answering technical questions about the computer), and the original invoice showing “Steven” as the salesman. The computer was brought to Polytechnic University of Turin where it was fixed and used to run the BASIC programming language.
• On June 15, 2012, a working Apple I was sold at auction by Sotheby’s for a then-record $374,500, more than double the expected price.
