T-Mobile US, Inc. is an American wireless network operator headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas, and Bellevue, Washington, U.S. Its largest shareholder is multinational telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom AG, which as of April 2023, holds a 53.3% majority stake in the company.

T-Mobile US is the third-largest wireless carrier in the United States, with 113.6 million subscribers at the end of Q4 2022. The company was founded in 1994 by John W. Stanton of the Western Wireless Corporation as VoiceStream Wireless, Deutsche Telekom then gained plurality ownership in 2001 and renamed it after its T-Mobile brand.

T-Mobile US provides wireless voice and data services in the United States under the T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile brands (the latter was acquired via the purchase of MetroPCS in a reverse takeover in 2013, resulting in T-Mobile going public on the NASDAQ stock exchange), and also serves as the host network for many mobile virtual network operators,

The company has annual revenues of around $80 billion. In 2015, Consumer Reports named T-Mobile the number one American wireless carrier. On April 1, 2020, T-Mobile and Sprint Corporation completed their merger, with T-Mobile now being the sole owner of Sprint, making Sprint an effective subsidiary of T-Mobile until the Sprint brand was officially discontinued on August 2, 2020, with the headquarters becoming T-Mobile offices.

As part of the merger, T-Mobile US acquired Assurance Wireless, the service subsidized by the Lifeline Assistance program of the federal Universal Service Fund,

Is T-Mobile only in the US?

Coverage Beyond: High-Speed Data Worldwide – T-Mobile introduced breakthrough travel benefits with Simple Global in 2013. This changed the game with how Un-carrier customers use their phones when traveling. T-Mobile customers – including businesses – now use a whopping 60 times more data overseas than before.

And today, T-Mobile is back at it again. Starting June 21, when touching down in a foreign country, T-Mobile customers will get 5GB of free high-speed data each month, up to 5G speeds where available, in 210+ countries and destinations on T-Mobile’s most popular plan, Magenta MAX, and on the Business Unlimited Ultimate plan.

No passes to buy. No hoops to jump through. No BS. This move is another first from T-Mobile, making the Un-carrier the only provider to offer this much high-speed data in this many places over 10X more locations than AT&T and over 10X more high-speed data than Verizon.

Plus, customers get the same experience of 5GB of high-speed data in 11 European countries — Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania and Slovakia — on Magenta, most business plans and equivalent Sprint plans thanks to T-Mobile’s partnership with Deutsche Telekom.

Essentially, everywhere a phone says “T-Mobile” customers will get the highest speeds available for their plan. And T-Mobile is doubling the speeds worldwide across all 210+ countries and destinations (from 128kbps to 256kbps) so customers’ phones just work from the moment they touch down for things like basic navigation and email.

This is in addition to the free texting customers already enjoy in those destinations. And it all comes on top of 5GB of high-speed data and free calling and texting for Magenta, Magenta MAX and eligible T-Mobile for Business customers in Mexico and Canada. Roam on without worry. In addition, T-Mobile for Business customers will soon get the Secure Wi-Fi mobile app, included at no extra cost with Business Advanced and Ultimate plans.

Secure Wi-Fi is a set-and-forget app that, when connected to public Wi-Fi, automatically helps protect customers’ data and enhance their experience on their smartphone – anywhere in the world. It’s perfect for when customers need to get work done and have no choice but to use public Wi-Fi.

Is LTE going away?

The good news is that 4G LTE will be available for at least a decade to come, and will co-exist with 5G networks. This article will provide updates on the sunsetting of 2G and 3G networks and the outlook for 4G LTE and 5G networks to support those who are planning their migration path.

Will 4G ever go away?

When will 4G be phased out? – No major carriers have announced plans to shut down their 4G networks, so it’s safe to assume that 4G will be around for quite a while. If we look at 3G as an example of what we might expect, it took over two decades from its commercial launch in 2001 to the beginning of its phase-out in the US in 2022.

  1. If 4G has as good a run as 3G did, then we won’t have to worry about the 4G phase-out until close to the year 2030.
  2. If we look ahead to new technologies like 5G, we get a similar outlook.
  3. Although wireless marketing is awash with 5G claims, 5G coverage is still very limited in comparison to 4G and true 5G speeds are basically unheard of (which according to international standards should be able to reach at least 20Gbps).

While scientists, engineers, and other telecommunications researchers are already working on 6G technologies, estimates put their implementation out around the year 2030 as well. Since we didn’t really see the phase out of 3G networks until 5G was already in the works, it’s safe to say that we can expect 4G to last just as long.

Is the iPhone 8 no longer supported by T-Mobile?

p”> Getty Apple’s new iPhone 8 and iPhone X won’t support the extended LTE network that T-Mobile spent $8 billion on acquiring from the FCC earlier this year. Both of Apple’s new iPhones lack support for the LTE band needed to access T-Mobile’s forthcoming 600MHz network, which provides better coverage in buildings and rural areas throughout the US.

Apple’s tech specs for both the iPhone 8 and iPhone X don’t show support for the Band 71 needed to access the network, and a T-Mobile representative confirmed Friday in a tweet that the 600MHz spectrum won’t be supported by the new phones. That’s significant news for T-Mobile customers planning to buy one of Apple’s latest iPhones.

While T-Mobile’s existing LTE network will continue to be accessible on the new iPhones, the devices won’t have access to the extended coverage that T-Mobile is betting will help it compete with AT&T and Verizon in less urban areas. “It’s the equivalent of beachfront spectrum, the stuff that works better in buildings and travels further from the tower,” T-Mobile CEO John Legere said in a video posted earlier this year announcing the carrier’s blockbuster $8 billion purchase of the coveted spectrum.

  1. Apple wouldn’t comment on its decision not to support 600MHz in its new phones.
  2. But it’s worth noting that Apple isn’t the only phone maker to miss out on T-Mobile’s new network, which just started rolling out in parts of the US last month and won’t be fully available to the entire country until 2020.

No phones technically support the 600MHz spectrum yet, although T-Mobile has said that phones from Samsung and LG will be supported by the fourth quarter of 2017. Because the capability to support 600MHz is hardware based, the new iPhones will not be able to get support later on through a software upgrade.

  • Analysts have predicted that this year’s iPhone 8 and X models will spark a “supercycle” of upgrades for many customers who have neared the end of their multi-year carrier purchase agreements for the iPhone 6 and 6s.
  • If you’re planning on sticking with one of this year’s iPhone models for the next couple of years, check out T-Mobile’s own coverage map predictions for how its 600MHz will be deployed in your area.
