How long was Sunday Night Football?
History – While ABC had been airing occasional Sunday Night NFL games (usually one per season) under its Monday Night Football banner since 1978, the concept of playing a regular series of Sunday night professional football games on ESPN was originally a concept designed for the United States Football League,
- As part of the abortive 1986 USFL season, ESPN was to carry a weekly Sunday night game throughout the fall season.
- As part of its new television package in 1987, the NFL granted ESPN the rights to air a series of Sunday night games, which were to air over the second half of the regular season.
- The NFL thus became the last major North American professional sports league to begin airing its games on cable television.
During the inaugural season of ESPN Sunday Night NFL (as the telecast was then branded) in 1987, the network’s announcing booth consisted of Mike Patrick and Joe Theismann, Two years later, the NFL expanded its Sunday night offerings to the full season, with TNT airing games in the season’s first half and ESPN taking over for the second half.
ESPN’s games were typically simulcast on regular over-the-air television stations in each participating team’s local market so that households without cable television could still see the telecasts. During the first season, the game between the New York Giants and New England Patriots (the very first regular season game aired by ESPN) saw WABC-TV (ABC’s flagship station out of New York City) produce a completely separate telecast from ESPN’s.
The reason behind this was that WABC’s union contract at the time prohibited non-union workers, such as those at ESPN, from producing live events for WABC. The WABC broadcasts involved play-by-play man Corey McPherrin and Frank Gifford and Lynn Swann on color commentary.
Beginning in 1998, ESPN broadcast the entire slate of Sunday night games (now officially rebranded as ESPN Sunday Night Football ), and had exclusive rights to any night game other than the season opener and regular Monday night games, which aired on ABC. Thus, ESPN would usually have a few weekends each season with games on both Saturday (sometimes Thursday instead) and Sunday nights.
Also in 1998, Paul Maguire joined Patrick and Theismann in the booth after re-joining ESPN after several years as a color commentator for NBC. Beginning in 1999, Suzy Kolber, who had recently rejoined ESPN from Fox Sports, served as the sideline reporter; Kolber replaced Solomon Wilcots, who joined CBS as a color commentator.
- In 2002, ESPN’s SNF crew covered the new Thursday, opening night kickoff game.
- In 2004, Pat Summerall replaced Patrick for the preseason and for several regular season weeks following Patrick’s recovery from open-heart surgery.
- After the 2005 season, ESPN ended this package in favor of picking up the broadcast rights to Monday Night Football from ABC.
NBC picked up the rights to ESPN ‘s Sunday night games. To replace Sunday Night Football ESPN moved its late-season Sunday Night Baseball broadcasts back to the network and replaced most of the rest of the open weeks with NBA telecasts.

Do football games happen on Sunday?
GAME TIMES AND BROADCAST PARTNERS – The league’s six broadcast partners (CBS, Fox, NBC, NFL Network, ESPN and Prime Video) all want each week’s best matchups to air on their networks so they can attract the largest audiences. The NFL’s marquee matchups often are scheduled to air during the week’s premier time slots — Thursday, Sunday or Monday nights or the late game on Sunday afternoons.
- The league typically schedules the Super Bowl champion at home for the Thursday night game that kicks off the new season.
- The league will also schedule games on the Saturdays of Weeks 15, 16 and 18.
- In Week 15, three of the five designated matchups will be played on Saturday with the remainder being played on Sunday.
Specific dates and start times for the designated Week 15 matchups will be determined and announced later during the season. In Week 18, two games will be played on Saturday with the remainder being played on Sunday. Specific dates, start times, and networks for Week 18 matchups will be determined and announced following the conclusion of Week 17.
Additionally, Week 16 will feature a Saturday doubleheader split between NBC and Peacock. That week will also feature a Christmas day tripleheader on CBS, FOX and ABC. Most NFL games are played on Sunday afternoons, with early games starting at 1:00 p.m. ET and the late games starting at either 4:05 p.m.
ET or 4:25 p.m. ET, depending on whether the game is part of a network doubleheader. The Sunday afternoon games are broadcast on CBS and FOX; and for the first time ever, games do not have a predetermined network assignment based on conference affiliation of participating teams.
This change allows the scheduling team more flexibility to build Sunday afternoon windows across CBS and FOX. The season will open and close with doubleheaders on both CBS and FOX and every market will see four Sunday afternoon games in Weeks 1 and 18. Over Weeks 2–17, Fox and CBS will each have eight doubleheaders.
In those weeks, one network will show games in both Sunday afternoon time slots, while the other will air only one game in either of the two time slots. Doubleheader weeks generally alternate between networks, but not always. It is possible for one network to have doubleheaders on consecutive weeks, but not three weeks in a row.

Why is football on Sunday?
February 4, 2016 / 10:10 PM / CBS Minnesota MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – This week, several WCCO viewers emailed asking, “Wouldn’t it be great to have the Super Bowl on a Saturday?” In its 50 years, that’s never happened and the NFL has said it doesn’t anticipate switching game day from Sunday,
So how did that tradition start? Why is pro football played on Sunday? Good Question. Professional football, as we know it today, started in 1920 when the American Professional Football Association (APFA) was created. At the time, college football was played on Saturdays and was already popular. “Pro football couldn’t hope to compete with college,” Michael MacCambridge, author of America’s Game: The Epic Story of How Pro Football Captured a Nation, said.
Sunday was a free day during a decade where it was common to work on Saturdays, so the APFA played most of their games on that day. Fast forward 30 years to the advent of television networks, who were desperately looking for programming on Sundays in the 1950s.
- No one wanted to be on that time,” Richard Crepeau, author of NFL Football: A History of America’s New National Pastime, said.
- The NFL could offer them live reality television on a Sunday afternoon.” In 1961, Congress passed one of the few sports-specific statutes in its history.
- The Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 allowed certain broadcasting agreements among major professional sports.
Within the law was a provision that essentially banned the NFL from broadcasting its games on Friday nights and Saturdays during the fall. “The colleges and high schools were a little leery of having the NFL on television on Friday and Saturday,” Crepeau said.
The NFL does hold some Saturday games starting in mid-to-late December, in addition to the current line-up on Monday and Thursday Night Football. But, as for whether the NFL would ever move the Super Bowl to a Saturday, MacCambridge thinks that likely wouldn’t happen. He said the idea of adding another week to the regular season has been floated around the NFL.
That would push the Super Bowl back one week to fall on President’s Day weekend, where many Americans already have that Monday off. “Then, that solves everyone’s problems,” MacCambridge said.

How long was the longest football?
The NFL’s longest ever game: Dolphins vs Chiefs in 1971 –
The longest the clock has ever been running in an NFL game was the clash between the and the Kansas City Chiefs in the 1971 AFC Divisional round, taking place on Christmas Day of 1971. On that occasion, the two sides had to go to double overtime and they recorded the longest ever NFL game time of 82 minutes and 40 seconds.A back-and-forth second half meant that the game finished 24-24, requiring overtime to determine a winner. The first 15 minutes of overtime produced no more points, and it took until around halfway through the second overtime period for the breakthrough to come. Garo Yepremian then stepped up and kicked a 37-yard field goal to give the Dolphins the 27-24 victory.”On the sideline, I was dying for the chance to take the kick and, after I kicked the ball, I looked up at the sky and thanked God for giving me the chance to kick it.”
That memorable game smashed the previous record, which had been the 77 minutes and 54 seconds of a Texans vs Oilers game in 1962. : NFL Record: What is the record for the longest game in NFL history?
What is the longest time in football history?
What is the longest football match in recorded history? –
- The longest football match in recorded history was the showdown between English clubs Stockport County and Doncaster Rovers at Edgeley Park on March 30, 1946,
- The duration of the match was a remarkable three hours and 23 minutes and the world record has stood for over half a century.
- It was a Division Three North Cup replay, after the first game ended 2-2 and, as it would turn out, 203 more minutes could not yield a victor.
- Tied once more at 2-2 after 90 minutes, the game between Stockport and Doncaster then went into extra time, but 30 more minutes were insufficient, with the two teams unable to score in that time period.
- Before penalty shootouts were rolled out across the game, some of the methods used to decide the winner of a match after a 120-minute stalemate inluded tossing a coin and, as in this case, ‘play to win’,
- The ‘play to win’ rule was commonplace in English football during the wartime period of the 1940s and it was a form of ‘golden goal’ – in essence, ‘next goal wins’.
- Stockport thought they had clinched the winner on the 173rd minute when Les Cocker put the ball into the back of the net, but their elation was shortlived as it was agonisingly disallowed by the referee.
- So they played on, each side valiantly searching for the decisive strike until, finally, the setting sun meant became too dark to play – floodlights, of course, not then commonplace at grounds.
It wasn’t the end of the matter though. Doncaster won the right to host the second replay in a coin toss and they made little mistake in that game, winning emphatically with a 4-0 scoreline.
- A cartoon depicting the match featured the quip: “With leaden feet County and Doncaster were interned at Edgeley Park with Mr Baker of Crewe a stern jailer.”
- Such lengthy encounters were relatively common during the period and another notable example came before in a War Cup match between Cardiff City and Bristol City, which lasted three hours and 20 minutes.
- In many cases, spectators were able to leave the action to eat dinner at home or tend to other business, and return before the games finished.
- However, the novelty soon wore off for wearied players and exasperated fans, so it wasn’t long after the 1946 game between Stockport and Doncaster – a few short months – that the ‘play to win’ rule was scrapped.
- By the 1970s, penalty shootouts had become the norm, but the allure of the neverending football match has endured for some.
- In 2019, for example, a charity football match in Wales lasted – though the conditions were non competitive and players were allowed to sleep for intervals.

ABC will air Monday Night Football all season as a result of Hollywood strikes Monday Night Football will be back on ABC weekly this season. ABC plans to air a Monday night game every week of the 2023 season as a result of the Hollywood strikes that have limited the entertainment content available to TV networks, according to multiple reports.
The Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild have been on strike for months, with no end in sight. Monday Night Football debuted on ABC in 1970 and was an ABC staple through 2005. It moved to ABC’s corporate sibling ESPN in 2006. This year the plan had initially been for a select few Monday night games to air simultaneously on ABC and ESPN, and for three Monday nights (including tonight) to have one game on ABC and a different game on ESPN.
But now ABC will get Monday Night Football every night, all season. This is not a long-term programming change but merely a one-season response to the writers’ and actors’ strikes. Next season, ESPN is again set to be the primary home of Monday Night Football, with ABC airing only a select few games.

How long has Monday Night Football been?
History of Monday Night Football – Kicking off in September 1970, Monday Night Football has become one of the longest-running primetime network series in history. It’s also one of the highest rated, and often ranks No.1 among male viewers. So, it’s hard to believe that major networks passed on giving it a home when it was getting off the ground in the ’70s because they didn’t want it to disrupt their primetime entertainment schedules.
- Adding a dash of entertainment going beyond the game, MNF has had its fair share of celebrity guests over the years, including musicians Plácido Domingo and John Lennon, former President Bill Clinton, and everyone’s favorite Muppet, Kermit the Frog.
- In fact, the Muppets did their own rendition of a holiday-themed MNF opening song that aired in 2020.
There have been many legendary moments over the years. MNF has offered sports fans solace during difficult times. Two weeks after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the Washington Commanders (known as the Redskins at the time) battled the Green Bay Packers, offering some semblance of a return to normalcy when the NFL returned to its regular schedule.
The highest-scoring MNF game was when the Los Angeles Rams beat the Kansas City Chiefs 54-51, totaling a whopping 105 points in 2018. The lowest-scoring game eeked out a paltry three points when the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Miami Dolphins 3-0, without a single touchdown in sight. Another memorable moment came in 2003 when the Indianapolis Colts battled the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,
The Colts made an incredible comeback from 35-14 to win 38-35 in overtime, led by soon-to-be first-time MVP Peyton Manning. Some of the most common matchups over the course of MNF have been the Denver Broncos vs. the Oakland Raiders (now the Las Vegas Raiders ) and the Dallas Cowboys vs.
