Is Popeyes like KFC?
The Chicken – PotaeRin/Shutterstock Good fried chicken should be a beautiful interplay of salty and crunchy. Breading that falls off the chicken is an absolute fried chicken cardinal sin, so there should certainly be none of that. You use your hands, you expect to get a little messy, but when it’s good fried chicken, nothing else matters.
- The main event at both KFC and Popeyes is, of course, the fried chicken.
- And from each chain, you can expect a good crunch, as well as juicy chicken.
- Popeyes stands out here, though, because they have somehow perfected the art of mass-produced fried chicken.
- Every single time, you will get chicken that is head-scratchingly delicious, perfectly cooked and covered in a mouth-watering batter.
According to Vice, part of the Popeyes magic lies in its seasonings, as well as their deep fryers. The machines somehow manage to maintain the ideal temperature to ensure the chicken is perfectly cooked on the outside and inside each time. KFC is certainly good.
Can you eat Popeyes after 5 days?
How Long Does Cooked Chicken Last? – According to the USDA, cooked chicken will last three to four days in the refrigerator, and two to three months in the freezer. Eating cooked chicken after this point can result in foodborne illness — even at refrigerated temperatures, bacteria can still grow.
This might leave you with the question: Can’t you just zap it in the microwave? Because microwaves heat food from the outside in, and not the other way around, reheating week-old cooked chicken in the microwave will kill bacteria on the surface, but it won’t eliminate toxins produced by the growing bacteria beneath the surface.
Here’s the bottom line: If your chicken is on day five, it’s not safe to eat anymore, even after reheating.
How long will Popeyes chicken last?
How Long Can You Keep Cooked Chicken In The Fridge? – If stored properly (in a ziplock storage bag or sealed container), the USDA says that cooked chicken can last three to four days in the refrigerator. And that goes for any type of cooked chicken—store-bought, homemade, or restaurant leftovers.
When did Popeyes start serving chicken?
Since 1972 Founded in 1972 Louisiana by Al Copeland who dreamed of serving the best fried chicken.50 years ago in New Orleans, Louisiana. A taste sensation was born.
Is Popeyes or KFC healthier?
When I started out as a registered dietitian 14 years ago (and having just moved here from Baton Rouge), I didn’t understand that fried chicken at Mardi Gras was such a big deal. Now I get it. Fried chicken is a portable snack that can be enjoyed hot or cold, no plate or utensils needed, and is clearly a non-negotiable Mardi Gras indulgence for many New Orleaneans.
And if Mardi Gras is the one time of the year that you satisfy your yen for fried chicken, then you likely don’t want to think too much about the nutritional stats. But for those of you who treat yourself to fried chicken more often, or those who try to maintain some semblance of your usual healthy habits even during Carnival season, here’s your nutritional guide to ordering this Mardi Gras favorite.
There’s the obvious: Have just a piece or two, not a four-piece combo. Skip the biscuit and fries. Opt for vegetables when available (green beans are usually your best bet), but check the nutrition facts first, since even seemingly healthful sides like Chick-Fil-A’s Carrot & Raisin Salad can have more calories and fat than an order of fries.
- And keep in mind that taking off the skin and batter leaves you with a piece of chicken that’s as lean as roasted or grilled skinless chicken.
- According to KFC’s nutrition facts, for example, simply pulling the skin and batter off of a single fried chicken breast saves you 200 calories, 17 grams of fat, and 500 mg of sodium.
But when it come to what part of the chicken is best in terms of calories, saturated fat, and sodium, the answer’s not so simple, since there’s a lot of variation in the nutrition facts provided by the fast food chains. Strips and tenders are the most consistent, with most three-piece orders ranging from 310 to 380 calories, but the stats for a fried wing, for example, can range from 120 calories to 430 calories depending on where you go.
So here are our best and worst picks (nutritionally speaking) from fast food joints and fried chicken chains, based on the nutrition facts provided on their websites. Note: Raising Canes is the only national fried chicken chain in the New Orleans area that doesn’t disclose nutrition facts, although third-party websites list nutrition stats for Raising Canes Chicken Strips that are similar to other chains.
Strips and tenders Top Pick: Popeyes Naked Tenders, They’re deep-fried but not breaded, so these all-white meat tenders have a fraction of the fat and calories of regular tenders, with just 170 calories, 0 saturated fat, and just two grams of carbs per three-tender serving.
- We even had these lab-analyzed to verify that they were in fact this low in calories).
- The sodium is also much lower than regular strips and tenders, with 550 mg sodium per three tenders.
- Worst Bets: Church’s Spicy Tender Strips have the worst stats all-around.
- They’re the highest-calorie of the national brands surveyed (420 calories for three strips), with twice as much saturated fat as the others, and six grams of trans fat per serving (the other brands have zero trans fat or just one gram at the most).
And while Popeyes Tenders may be slightly lower in calories than other brands (310-340 calories for three tenders), they have 50 percent more sodium than other fried tenders. Breast Top Picks: KFC’s Kentucky Grilled Chicken Breast has just 220 calories, two grams of saturated fat, and zero carbs, with a whopping 40 grams of protein.
- And Church’s has the lowest-calorie fried chicken breast, with their nutrition facts showing 200 calories per breast.
- But even though it may be lower in calories, it has half the protein and 50 percent more fat than KFC’s Grilled breast.
- Worst Bets: Popeye’s Breasts pack in the most salt, with 1330 mg of sodium (nearly a day’s worth) in every 440-calorie breast, and KFC’s Extra Crispy Breas t isn’t far behind, with 1140 mg sodium per 490-calorie breast.
Both have nearly as much fat as protein, with a carb content close to that of a serving of pasta. Wing Top Picks: KFC’s Kentucky Grilled Wings and their Original Recipe Wings are two of the lower-calorie wings in fried chicken chains. Their Grilled wings are 80 calories each, and their Original Recipe Wings (smaller than the other guys’ wings) are just 120 calories each.
Worst Bets: Church’s Spicy Wing out-fats the competition, with a whopping 430 calories and 27 grams of fat per wing. And it has two to three times more sodium and more than twice the carbs of other wings. Thigh Top Picks: Once again, it’s KFC’s Kentucky Grilled Thigh (170 calories and three grams of saturated fat), followed by KFC’s Original Recipe Thigh (250 calories) and Popeyes Spicy Thigh (260 calories).
Worst Bets: Church’s Spicy Thigh has the most sodium, saturated fat, trans fat and carbs, and with 480 calories per thigh, it packs in nearly twice as many calories as KFC’s Original Recipe Thigh. Drumsticks and Legs Top Picks: Of course, KFC’s Kentucky Grilled is tops again, with just 90 calories per drumstick.
And Church’s Original Leg (110 calories) and KFC’s Original Recipe Drumstick (120 calories) aren’t far behind. Worst Bets: Church’s Spicy Leg comes in last in all aspects, with 180 calories per leg and more trans fat, carbs and sodium than other chains. But Popeye’s Legs and KFC’s Extra Crispy Drumsticks really aren’t much better, with 160 to 170 calories per drumstick, and nearly as much sodium and saturated fat as Church’s Spicy Leg.
The bottom line: If you’re heading to a Mardi Gras parade or party and you’re looking to pick up a healthy snack, KFC’s Kentucky Grilled is always your best bet. But if you’ve just gotta have your Popeyes, give their Naked Tenders a try. And regardless of what type of chicken you opt for, keep in mind that your choice of side items can make it or break it, nutritionally speaking, and most just really aren’t worth it.
Is KFC better than McDonald’s?
The result: McDonald’s wins – While chicken is an obvious Men’s Health staple, KFC’s reliance on greasy oils and subsequent sky-high calorific content makes Maccy’s an unlikely victor. The more varied menu and healthy options, as well as classic, gut-busting fare, make it the ideal spot to play fast and loose with your nutrition plan.
Is Popeyes fresh or frozen?
Our chicken is freshly prepared daily in our restaurants, NEVER frozen. We believe the best food takes time, all our chicken is marinaded for 12 hours in our signature blend of Louisiana herbs & spices and then hand-breaded and hand-battered to create that famous Popeyes Shatter-Crunch.
Can I leave KFC out overnight?
How to store cooked chicken – To store cooked chicken, make sure that it does not sit out at room temperature for more than two hours or more than one hour in temperatures above 90°F. Ensure it is cooled to room temperature within two hours before stowing it in the refrigerator or freezer.
Cooling off your cooked chicken keeps your other foods in the fridge and freezer safe. Allowing your cooked chicken to cool in the refrigerator can cause the temperature inside the fridge and freezer to rise, putting your other foods in the refrigerator and freezer at risk. So, after your cooked chicken is cooled, and within two hours or less, place it in an airtight container, or wrap it with heavy-duty, food-safe plastic wrap, to retain the cooked chicken’s quality.
You may also want to date the container to remind you when you stored it. Cooked chicken can last for three to four days in the fridge and two to six months in the freezer, according to the consumer food safety app, FoodSafety.gov, Where you place your cooked chicken in the fridge also matters.
Why does Popeyes have so many calories?
– “One thing is for sure, the fried chicken sandwich wars have nothing to do with nutrition,” Allison Knott, MS, RDN, CSSD, a registered dietitian based in New York City, told Healthline. Indeed, every dietitian Healthline spoke with made it clear there’s nothing healthy about either of the sandwiches.
Even though we don’t have the confirmed nutrition facts for the new Popeyes Chicken Sandwich, it is safe to say that it is similar to the Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich, which is over 200 calories lower than the Popeyes version,” Knott said. “It will be interesting to see which one of the sandwiches is lower in sodium and saturated fat, but either way, neither is recommended as an option on a regular basis.” But if we’re declaring the overall nutrition winner, that title goes to the Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich.
It has lower sodium and less saturated fat, said Christina Crowder, MS, RDN/LD, CNSC, CDE, a registered dietitian and certified specialist in nutrition support. “It appears that the Popeyes Chicken Sandwich packs a heavier caloric punch, which can be attributed to what looks like thicker breading, than the Chick-fil-A sandwich.
- More bread equals more oil absorption during frying,” Crowder said.
- The brioche bun also tends to have more calories, carbs, and fat than a traditional hamburger bun.
- You could always ditch half the bun if you wanted to lower the calorie and carb count.” What’s more, the chicken sandwich from Popeyes likely exceeds the daily sodium recommendation, since Chick-fil-A’s, at more than 1,500 milligrams (the Deluxe version), is very near the maximum.
“Fried chicken isn’t the greatest choice compared to grilled, but if you love a good ol’ fried chicken sandwich every now and again — which isn’t wrong — you may go to Chick-fil-A to keep your nutrition in check,” Crowder said.
Is Popeyes good reheated?
Is it safe to reheat fried chicken? – In short, yes. Reheating leftover fried chicken is safe, provided that it was fully cooked the first time and was well wrapped and refrigerated promptly (within a couple hours) after it was originally cooked. In fact, eating leftover fried chicken cold or even room temperature is safe as long as it hasn’t spent more than two hours in the “danger zone,” which is the USDA’s term for temperatures between 40°F and 140°F, when bacteria grow fastest.
Can I freeze fried chicken?
How long can you freeze fried chicken for? – Once your fried chicken has cooled down, you can place it into a container as directed above and store it for up to 4 months in the freezer. However, the longer it’s in the freezer, the less tasty it will become – so it’s best to eat it fresh or within a month of freezing.

Is KFC older than Popeyes?
Elliott Cowand Jr/Shutterstock Popeyes has been frying chicken since 1972, per the company website, According to People, founder Alvin C. Copeland Sr. opened the eatery to compete with Kentucky Fried Chicken franchises, the first of which opened two decades prior in Utah (via KFC ).
- Initially, Copeland established his New Orleans restaurant under a completely different name.
- When the restaurant failed to gain traction within its first few months, Copeland attributed the failure to his chicken recipe (via People).
- He closed up shop for several days and reopened it as Popeyes, featuring spicier Cajun-style chicken on the menu.
Contrary to popular belief, Popeye the Sailor was not the inspiration behind the new name. That honor belongs to Detective Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle, a fictional character from the 1971 film “The French Connection,” played by Gene Hackman. The Popeyes name eventually became a success and has remained to this day.
What is so popular at Popeyes?
People loved that chicken sandwich from Popeyes. (ERIC BARADAT/AFP via Getty Images) AFP via Getty Images Maybe you got to try one the first time around, Or, perhaps you caught up to it when it made its comeback, Perhaps you thought the hoopla was too extra for your taste, and didn’t make an effort.
No matter what, you undoubtedly knew that Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen introduced a fried chicken sandwich in 2019, and that it became a fast food phenomenon. The sandwich hit the restaurant world like an asteroid, and its impact was almost as strong when it returned to the menu. The Takeout called it “the biggest food news story of 2019 and maybe our lifetime.” Every TV network and local station seemed to cover it.
The sandwich made the New Yorker, Chefs tried it, and some tried to copy it. Certainly, Forbes readers gobbled up everything I wrote about the Fried Chicken Sandwich Wars last summer and again in the fall. (Sorry for the pun.) The fried chicken sandwich was a marketing bonanza for Popeyes, earning it an estimated $65 million in marketing power.
- Traffic at Popeyes restaurants spiked into triple digits, and the sandwich brought the company a different demographic than usually comes to its restaurants.
- The fried chicken sandwich certainly changed my perception of Popeyes.
- As a regular visitor to New Orleans, I’ve eaten Popeyes lots of times, particularly at Mardi Gras parties.
I know people there are proud that the company has Louisiana in its name, even though its owners are now Canadian. And I’m well aware of the rivalry between Popeyes and the other famous Southern chicken chain, Chick-fil-A, which is considered the fast food sector’s gold standard.
- But, before the sandwich, I generally knew Popeyes for chicken on the bone and popcorn chicken.
- The sandwich made me consider it as a viable option to the other chicken places that I like, including Raising Cane’s and Zaxby’s.
- I’ve been thinking about how this all happened, and I came up with four reasons.
The sandwich wasn’t just a perfect storm. It was a snowstorm, thunderstorm, tsunami and haboob, all combined. It tasted good. It’s just like Paul Hollywood says on the Great British Bake Off, The bake comes first, and then the decor and flavor innovation.
- Popeyes knew the sandwich had to be something consumers want to eat, and spent two years working on it.
- It knew it had to be a great item, and that customers had to be willing to wait in line for long minutes or even hours.
- My own criteria for judging a dish is always whether I’d want to eat it again.
I was happy to eat the Popeyes sandwich twice. That said, I haven’t had a third one, but I might some day. It was accessible. It’s hard to become a craze if you can’t find the object of desire. Luckily, Popeyes has been on an expansion drive. There are about 2,400 in the U.S., which is double where Popeyes was a few years ago.
Of course, Popeyes is dwarfed by Starbucks and McDonald’s, but that number of stores is on a par with Chick-fil-A. So if you wanted to find the chicken sandwich, you generally could, even if you had to drive miles to find it. I drove 17 miles. It was affordable. I was pleasantly surprised that Popeyes priced its chicken sandwich at $3.99.
I think it could have gotten away with charging more. The sandwich is quite hefty, with a large slab of fried chicken breast, pickles and a substantial bun. Each time I tried it, I did not eat dinner, I was so full afterwards. Of course $3.99 would buy you four things on McDonald’s Dollar Menu, and maybe even more food at a Taco Bell.
Conversely, it’s easy to pay $5 and up for complete meals at fast food outlets. I thought McDonald’s might have priced its P.L.T. too high, at $4.90 in U.S. dollars. At Popeyes, $3.99 was clearly doable. Timing is crucial. The Popeyes sandwich originally arrived on August 12, in kind of a dead zone for food news.
By then, other restaurants were already planning ahead for fall. You were starting to hear about the imminent return of the Pumpkin Spice Latte at Starbucks, which showed up in late August. But in many parts of the country, temperatures were toasty, meaning no one was quite ready yet to think about drinks connected with autumn leaves.
Popeyes’ sandwich landed when people were eager to go eat one. It wasn’t a burden to wait in line for a sandwich in warm weather. If you didn’t want to eat inside or in your car, you could go have a picnic. That was less true when it returned in November, but Popeyes still managed to bring the chicken sandwich back before big fall snowstorms and high winds that swept parts of the country.
No doubt the great fried chicken sandwich wars of 2019 will become a business school case, and marketeers across many fields are analyzing it to see whether they can emulate it. McDonald’s and Taco Bell are already testing new fried chicken items, and you can bet 2020 will see efforts to capture some of the magic that the Popeyes sandwich enjoyed.

Why is McDonald’s chicken so good?
How are McDonald’s Chicken Nuggets Made? – There are some common misconceptions when it comes to how McNuggets are made. But luckily for us, McDonald’s released a How It’s Made episode about its chicken nuggets (just like it released an episode about its french fries ).
- The episode features former MythBusters host Grant Imahara who takes viewers through the Tyson facility to debunk the internet’s rumors surrounding McNuggets — and spoiler alert, McDonald’s chicken nuggets are made with real chicken.
- First, McDonald’s McNuggets are made with white meat only — which includes breast meat, rib meat, tenderloin, and just a little bit of the chicken skin (for extra flavor).
The chicken is ground into a coarse ground chicken mixture. It’s coarser than the ground chicken that you find at the grocery store, which gives the McNugget its thick, meaty texture. Then, the ground chicken is mixed with marination ingredients, which are all publicly available on the McDonald’s site,
The ingredients include water, sodium phosphates, food starch-modified, salt, natural flavoring, wheat starch, dextrose, citric acid, autolyzed yeast extract, rosemary extract, and safflower oil. These components work together to add moisture, enhance flavor, and preserve freshness. The chicken is then formed into four iconic shapes: a bowtie, boot, bell, and ball.
The formed chicken nugget is breaded three times — first in a light batter, then in a breading with celery and white pepper, and finally in a thick tempura batter that contains leavening agents to aerate the batter. This gives the McNugget the crispy, yet airy texture and lightly spiced flavor.
The McNuggets are only partially fried at the facility to set the batter, then flash frozen, and shipped to each McDonald’s restaurant where they will be fully cooked to order. An interesting note is that factories have kitchens on site to spot-check fully cooked nuggets every hour to make sure production is turning out perfect pieces.
While the chicken nugget is delicious on its own thanks to the crispy, aerated breading and the juicy all-white chicken inside, the McNugget is even better with some dipping sauces (and McDonald’s knows it).
