You give your friend an over-enthusiastic hug, take another shot at the bar, and immediately drunk-text your ex. What happened here? Why did the band wait for so long to play? This unfortunate Friday night (and Saturday morning) is brought to you by a lack of long-term trust between bands, patrons, and venue owners.

Consider this: the next time you plan on going out to see this band or any other, you’ll consider your last experience and decide to wait a little longer before heading to the venue. You may even wait until close to 11 to head that way. Even though the event is still slated to start at 8 p.m. sharp. From the band’s perspective, the choice is easy: wait for as long as possible to start the show, since patrons tend to show up later and later and bands prefer to play in front of more people rather than less.

A band doesn’t want to start at 8, even if they said they were starting at 8, since no one believes them. And for good reason. Bands are waiting for patrons to show up and patrons are waiting for bands to play in an iterated game that everyone always loses, pushing show start-times later and later.

• This is bad for everyone because it necessarily limits local, live music to those that can be out until 1 in the morning.
• That’s a tiny crowd.
• Too small to effectively grow a music scene We need good music playing somewhere by 5 or 6 in the evening.
• That’s virtually unheard of and – as we saw above – unsustainable.

What’s the solution? Since we can’t trust the patrons to show up earlier or the bands to play earlier, because they’re incentivized not to, I think we have to place all of our hopes on the venue owners. They need to force bands to start earlier in the hopes that, over time, patrons can trust an event posting when it says the music starts at a particular time.

This means that some bands will get screwed in the short-run because they’ll be playing for no people because everyone is still under the old paradigm. Depends if you don’t mind being pushed around by complete strangers. The pit is fine if you plan to dance around while watching the show. I’ve done floor admission and reserved seating, I prefer floor because I never sat for any show i’ve been too busy singing and dancing to each song.
