Why is Walgreens called Duane Reade?

Gary Charboneau, the company’s senior vice-president of sales and marketing since 1993, explained his store layout strategy in New York magazine in 2005. He designed each store using four sections: one for beauty and cosmetic products, another that serves as a pharmacy, a third section for seasonal products such as cards and candy, and a fourth for household and grocery items.

Cosmetic items were placed near store entrances, pharmacy sections were moved to the rear of stores since—according to Charboneau—”people don’t browse for prescriptions”, and the other two sections occupied the remaining space. Ian Mount wrote in the magazine article, “half of Duane Reade’s sales come from food, cosmetics, and the like.” Under CEO Anthony Cuti, who was previously president of Pathmark, the store expanded from 59 stores in 1996 to 249 stores in May 2005, with more stores in New York City than any other drugstore chain.

In September 1998, Duane Reade acquired Rock Bottom Stores Inc, another drug retail chain with 38 retail stores, for $30 million plus an additional $31 million for the store’s inventories. While sales for Duane Reade rose from $1.14 billion in 2001 fiscal year to $1.38 billion in 2003, the combined impact of union disputes, a local recession, and the destruction of their best-performing store in the September 11 attacks forced the company to slow its expansion from 30 new stores a year in 2001 and 2002 to no more than 17 a year in 2003 and 2004.

Despite its expansion, the company had long-term debts of $405 million by October 2008, losing $33.1 million in the first half of that year. Residents at a recent 17th precinct NYPD community counsel meeting worried that shoplifting played a role in the decision by the corporate parent company to close the store. A spokesperson for the parent company Walgren’s did not mention shoplifting as a factor when contacted by Our Town. “When faced with the difficult decision to close a store, several factors are taken into account,” the spokesperson said.

“Things like our existing footprint of stores, dynamics of the local market, changes in the buying habits of our patients and customers, and more are considered” said the spokespeson who finally got back to us on March 20 confirming the March 9 closure that Our Town had previously reported.

The spokesperson said that customers do not need to take any action regarding their prescription info since it automatically will be transferred to a nearby store. “When a store closes, in most cases, patients do not need to take any action. Their pharmacy files are automatically transferred to a nearby location.

In this instance, patient pharmacy files were transferred to our location at 711 3rd Ave.Patients receive notice about any changes through mail and other means to provide details about continued access to their prescriptions and other services.” An employee in the store prior to its closing said that employees were being transferred to other nearby Duane Reade locations including the story on 711 Third Ave.

For the longest time, something has been nagging me about the prices at Duane Reade. It’s almost like everything is more expensive than it should be, but not too expensive that you’ll really take the time to think about shopping somewhere else. Then, a few months ago, after my local mom-and-pop pharmacy went out of business, I started shopping at the local Duane Reade, and I became more and more convinced I was being charged higher prices for products I could buy cheaper at the rival CVS literally one block away (Duane Reade, incidentally, is owned by Walgreens).

For stores, I chose two Duane Reades in the Williamsburg/Greenpoint area that had rival drug stores within a few blocks:

• Duane Reade at 164 Kent Ave, compared with CVS at 27 North 6th Street (one block apart);
• Duane Reade at 893 Manhattan Ave, compared with CVS at 859 Manhattan Ave (one block apart), and Rite Aid at 783 Manhattan Ave (3.5 blocks away)

1. I also included the Duane Reade at Bedford Ave just to see how it stacked up against the rest, though it has no immediate competition and prices would presumably be higher.
2. Finally, if a store was having a sale on any of the products (which they all did intermittently), I ignored the sale price in favor of the normal store price, since sales are obviously temporary and cannot be relied upon. Here’s how it all stacked up:

Now let’s talk about sales. Duane Reade was also the drug store offering the most sales on the products above. But it was weird. Sometimes, the sale price beat the competition – the shampoo above was marked down to $5.49/bottle, for example, and deodorant marked down to $4.79.

But other times, the sale price was still more expensive than at competing stores – contact solution was “on sale” for $19.99, but that was still more expensive than the regular $18.99 price found literally everywhere else. Other times, they’d advertise something like toilet paper as a “Great Deal,” at a price ($5.99) that was nonetheless way higher than the competition.

Regardless, the with sales prices included in the final tally, the Duane Reade totals were still in the low $70 range – still more expensive, and that’s not even factoring in the sales at rival stores. Final Conclusion In short, it seems that Duane Reade charges the shit out of you at normal price, then uses occasional sales to give you the sense that you’re actually getting deals.

• Whereas rivals CVS and Rite Aid don’t have as many items on sale, but keep prices at a much lower every day standard, which ultimately seems to work out much better for the consumer.
• Glad to know that I’m not completely nuts (well, besides the fact that I took the time to do this ridiculous study).

Later, she discovered those two doctors’ licenses had been revoked. Adderall is a drug that stimulates the nervous system. It’s in a category of drugs commonly referred to as “uppers,” the type of medical drugs misused the most frequently. According to Iqvia Holdings, 41.4 million people were prescribed Adderall in 2021, which is up 10.4% from 2020.

says the drug she and her colleagues most often refuse to fill is Adderall. *** Mike Young’s reasoning for his Adderall prescription is blunt. “I didn’t think I would have been capable of going out and getting an impressive job and being able to grind away for 8, 10, 12 hours a day if needed without it,” Young said.

Young, 24, said he began regularly taking Adderall when he was 22. He graduated from Rutgers University in May 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. While searching for a finance job, he sought an Adderall prescription to help him focus. When he moved to Manhattan and started at Bloomberg as an FX Analyst, he quickly noticed that he wasn’t the only one with a prescription.

“I became pretty close friends with most of my co-workers. Most of them were prescribed Adderall,” said Young. Young left Bloomberg in 2021 and began working at AscendX, a global cryptocurrency platform. As Young entered the New York dating scene and expanded his social circles outside of work, he noticed many other people had Adderall prescriptions, too.

It was a crutch that most people seem to rely on to some degree,” he said. Young received his prescription from his primary physician, but the COVID-19 pandemic and push toward telehealth allowed many others to get theirs online. “I don’t think Telehealth companies have such a rigorous process.” Last summer, The Wall Street Journal reported the DEA launched an investigation into the prescription practices of Cerebral, a telehealth company that launched in January of 2020. As a result, The United States Department of Justice is conducting an ongoing investigation into the telehealth company for possible violations of the Controlled Substances Act. In response, CVS, the largest pharmaceutical company in the United States, announced that they would no longer fill prescriptions from Cerebral.

In the aftermath of these events, Cerebral confirmed to Insider in mid-summer of 2022 that it halted prescribing substances, including Adderall. Existing patients would also lose access to the drugs they had become accustomed to taking by mid-October.

“Doctors need to strategically pick the right medication for the person, their personality, their body’s metabolism, their body’s chemical makeup,” said K. “It all makes a difference.” As of February 2023, there’s still a shortage of Adderall. According to the FDA Shortage tracker, it’s due to the unprecedented increase in demand.

• Young recently quit his job at the cryptocurrency firm and is now a bartender in Manhattan.
• As he continues searching for a career in the workforce he is more suited for, he’s also trying to wean himself off of Adderall.
• It scares him, he says, that because his body is so accustomed to the drug when he does not take it, he is a lesser version of himself without it.

“It’s like I’m below baseline,” he said. Young thinks the real reason why so many young people seek out Adderall is because of societal pressure to subscribe to the social norms of a white-collar job. “Adderall just makes all of that easier,” he said. “And it’s just a real shame that young people need to feel that pressure in the first place.

And now FedEx and Walgreens have also set up a similar arrangement. Customers that are now sending back a return through FedEx can now go to most Walgreens stores to return the item. The service will be available at thousands of Walgreen stores. A spokesperson for FedEx said in an e-mail that the rollout is expected to begin this month.

While the company spokesperson couldn’t confirm any specific locations, the service will be available at thousands of Walgreens stores nationwide. Walgreens says that this service will be available at most of its stores soon with the rest of the stores coming online after the holidays.
