- Consolidated Stores Corp.
- Agreed to limit their use of the Odd Lots name to stores located within a certain radius of Columbus.
Beyond the radius, Consolidated began opening stores under the Big & Small Lots name. Eventually, all Odd Lots stores were rebranded as Big Lots. In 1985, Consolidated Stores Corp. began trading as a separate public company on the American Stock Exchange.
In 1986, Consolidated Stores Corp. switched to the New York Stock Exchange, trading under the symbol CNS. Consolidated Stores Corp. was an investor in the DeLorean Motor Company, which declared bankruptcy in 1982. Consolidated took possession of approximately 100 DeLorean models, then still at the factory in Northern Ireland, when the U.S.
importer was unable to import them. This unusual excess inventory acquisition is commemorated on the Big Lots website’s “Closeout Museum” page. In 1994, Consolidated Stores Corp. acquired Toy Liquidators, adding 82 stores in 38 states. Looking to expand further into the toy business, Consolidated Stores Corp.
purchased KB Toys from Melville Corporation in 1996; ironically, shortly afterward Melville purchased Revco and folded it into the CVS Pharmacy chain on its way to eventually becoming CVS Health, making the “Odd Lots” dispute moot. In 1997, Big Lots Inc. bought out ‘MacFrugals’ ( Pic ‘N’ Save ) stores for $995 million in stock, eventually converting them to the Big Lots brand.
In 2000, Consolidated Stores Corp. sold the KB Toys and Toy Liquidators lines to private equity shops. A year later, Consolidated Stores Corp. changed its name to Big Lots, Inc. and its ticker symbol from CNS to BLI. In the later part of 2005, Big Lots closed 170 stores, including all free-standing Big Lots Furniture specialty stores.

Similar to Autozone and Whirlpool, Big Lots stood out to me in the TIP Filter function in the TIP Finance tool because I am familiar with the company and have even shopped at its stores. One of my favorite investing strategies is that popularized by Peter Lynch, causing me to often analyze business and look for investment ideas in companies such as Big Lots. Now the question is, at today’s price of $68.30, is Big Lot’s stock undervalued?

Where is Sol Shenk from?
Country of origin: Russia Year came to U.S.: circa 1950 Education: University of Toledo, Ohio State University Business: Big Lots Inc. (Consolidated Stores Corporation, 1967) Headquarters: Columbus, OH 2021 revenue: $6.2 billion Worldwide employment: 23,350 Ranked 515 in the 2022 Fortune 500
Shenk built his fortune with a series of strategic buyouts including bankrupt companies and overstock. He was ahead of his time and unafraid to adapt to changing markets.
Sol A. Shenk led a very fruitful life. His auto parts wholesale shop in 1967 had transformed into a $1 billion business by the time of his death in 1994. Today, that business is an empire approaching the 1,500-store threshold in the U.S. and Canada. That big business is Big Lots.
- Shenk emigrated from Russia in the mid-1900s and brought with him a razor-sharp sense of business.
- In 1967, he started Consolidated Stores Corporation through which he opened a discount store selling spare parts in Columbus, Ohio.
- In just four years, that store grew into a chain.
- It was the strategic buyout of the manufacturer of the Bricklin car, with its famous gull-wing, upward-opening doors, that catapulted him into the big league.
Shenk did something that Malcolm Bricklin had been unable to do. He made money by selling parts to car owners. Shenk was thus able to open Odd Lots in 1982. He bought odd lots of merchandise from production overruns, bankruptcies and overstock and sold it through the store in Columbus.
- Within three years, Consolidated Stores went public.
- It opened other stores like Big Lots, All for $1 and It’s a Deal.
- Within 12 years, it was named one of the 10 most profitable chains in the United States.
- Shenk was said to have a “caretaker attitude” toward what eventually became just Big Lots, according to former company president Brady Churches.
Such a disposition permitted Shenk to mold his business as necessary even if this meant big changes such as continually restructuring the company to handle its explosive growth. Like most other immigrant entrepreneurs, Shenk was a risk-taker. In his case, the risk paid off in a “big” way.
