The news this week wasn’t great, Revenues inched up less than 1%, gross-profit margins declined, and earnings per share (EPS) were cut nearly in half to just $1.43 per share.
Little wonder, then, that Advanced Auto Parts announced it is switching CEOs and installing Shane O’Kelly in the office effective Sept.11. Wall Street doesn’t seem convinced that a change in CEO will suffice to save this car parts dealer, however. Yesterday, five separate analysts cut their price targets on the stock, and this morning a sixth – Stephens – joined in with one of the lowest targets we’ve yet seen: $71 per share.

Advance Auto Parts stock sinks toward 12-year low after credit cut to ‘junk’ status at S&P Global Ratings Shares of Advance Auto Parts Inc. (AAP) dropped 3.7% toward a 12-year low in morning trading Tuesday, after S&P Global Ratings downgraded the auto parts retailer’s credit to “junk” status, saying the company’s efforts to improve inventory and product availability have “languished” due to inconsistent execution.
The credit rating agency cut the company’s issuer-credit rating to BB+, which is the highest speculative-grade rating, from BBB-, while revising the outlook to stable from negative. S&P also criticized the company for its “misguided strategic decision” to try to preserve and expand margins while its competitors cut prices.
“Over the past eighteen months, Advance’s sales have largely been flat, while its peers’ revenues have grown in a low-teen percent,” S&P said in a research note. “We believe Advance has ceded market share and its competitive standing in the industry has weakened.” The stock, which is on track for its lowest close since October 2011, has tumbled 59.0% year to date.
In comparison, shares of rivals AutoZone Inc. (AZO) have gained 3.8% this year and of O’Reilly Automotive Inc. AutoZone reported adjusted sales of about $9 billion for the year ended Aug.31.
A strengthening U.S. economy in the first half of 2013 prompted more Americans to buy new cars, eating into the market for replacement parts, already sluggish due to a warmer-than-usual winter last year. Advance Auto, which has relied on acquisitions to offset a fall in organic sales, said the General Parts purchase will give it coast-to-coast access in North America, hugely increasing its customer reach.
Advance Auto Chief Executive Darren Jackson said the addition of 1,418 Carquest locations would give the company scale across North America and the opportunity to position it as the leader in the commercial market. Raleigh, North Carolina-based General Parts operates about 40 percent of Carquest’s 3,400 stores across North America.
Founded in 1961 by Temple Sloan Jr., General Parts also owns Worldpac, which supplies replacement parts for imported car and truck brands. Sources told Reuters in July 2012 that General Parts was auctioning off its Carquest stores for about $2 billion.
Advance Auto also said on Wednesday that sales for the quarter ended Sept.30 rose 4.3 percent due to its purchase of BWP Distributors Inc last year. Sales at stores open for at least a year fell 2 percent. Advance Auto will have to pay a termination fee of $185 million, under certain circumstances, if the deal falls through.

Can advance auto clear a code?
How a code reader works – When an automotive sensor fails, its specific outputs change. For example, let’s say the air intake temperature sensor gets corroded over time and eventually fails to work. The ECU is looking for a specific signal range from that sensor and will throw up a check engine light and store a code “P0113” or similar if that signal fails to register to the ECU.
When the ECU doesn’t receive a signal within normal operating tolerances, the ECU illuminates the check engine light to get your attention. In short, the check engine light alerts you to a problem, and the stored code tells you what the problem is. The code reader connects to your 16-pin OBD-II port, usually located under the steering column.
The code reader and ECU use the same programming language and are able to communicate, so the reader understands that “P0113” is a failed air intake temperature sensor and puts this on the display screen. With this knowledge, you can take a quick trip to the auto-parts store and replace the sensor.
What does code P0420 mean?
Diagnosing Catalytic Converter P0420 Code A common emissions code seen in the field, a P0420 trouble code indicates that the catalytic converter isn’t functioning efficiently. To work at peak efficiency, the emissions or feed gases entering the catalytic converter need to be perfectly balanced and not excessively elevated. To resolve the code, follow these steps: The first step is to resolve any other codes that may have come up in addition to the P0420; especially troublesome is the P0300 series of cylinder misfire codes. A P0300 code could be related to something in the ignition (spark plug or coil), the fuel injector, compression or fuel contamination. Checking for and Resolving Exhaust System Leaks If one cylinder is running lean and the other cylinders are running rich, this is an indication that the engine has an imbalance in power output. This imbalance can create excessive emissions by raising hydrocarbon and nitrous oxide output simultaneously. 
Another cause of elevated emissions is worn or fouled spark plugs. In order to meet stringent emission durability requirements of 80,000 or more miles, many modern vehicles come equipped with long-lasting iridium spark plugs. These long-lasting iridium spark plugs sometimes get replaced with spark plugs made of other materials and may not provide the same length of service life.
As the spark plug starts to fail, emissions can start to become elevated sometimes as early as 20,000 or 30,000 miles after replacement. Now that you have learned about the different steps you can take to improve converter efficiency. Next, let’s look at how to test the performance of the converter. You can tell what’s going on inside of the converter by monitoring the operation of the rear oxygen sensor, which in turn monitors the performance of the converter.
Graphing the rear oxygen sensor voltage output while monitoring it under different driving conditions can give some insights as to how the converter is performing. Anytime the voltage is steady and at 450mlv or higher, this indicates good converter performance; if under any driving conditions, it can obtain a steady 450mlv or higher, replacing the converter is most likely not going to resolve the issue.
The cause of the issue is most likely related to elevated emissions or imbalanced feed gases as discussed earlier. The rear oxygen sensor will drop below (swinging never holding steady) 450mlv when the feed gases entering the converter aren’t perfectly balanced. If all of the diagnostics are still pointing to an issue with the catalytic converter (the rear oxygen sensor rarely maintains a steady 450mlv or higher), the next step is to perform an oxygen storage capacity test to determine the condition of the converter.
Before running the test, fully warm up the converter. Also, follow the steps above to obtain the rear oxygen sensor reading of 450mlv or above and steady at idle. Once these conditions are met, you can run the test. Start by depleting the converter of all its oxygen by forcing the mixture to run rich and then taking away that rich condition and make it go lean.
- Compare the front and rear oxygen sensors to determine how long it takes to see the lean condition in the front and then how long it takes the rear oxygen sensor to see the lean condition.
- A two second or more delay typically indicates that the converter is operating properly and you should continue running diagnostics to understand the root cause of the converter efficiency issue.
One of the easiest ways to determine what is going on inside of the converter and the emissions output of the engine is with a recently calibrated 5-gas analyzer. An analyzer will allow you to see all five emissions to quickly determine the gas balance and the cause of elevated emissions.
As an example, if hydrocarbons are elevated but the air/fuel mixture is balanced, this usually indicates worn spark plugs or low compression. If both nitrous oxide and hydrocarbon emissions are elevated, this indicates cylinder imbalance issue. Lastly, if both oxygen and hydrocarbon emissions are elevated it indicates cylinder misfires.
Remember, converters don’t fail on their own, so it’s important to resolve the root cause before replacing the converter. If all emissions are balanced and low, and converter efficiency is still an issue, it typically indicates that the converter is damaged and in need of replacement.
