There, Glenn begins to pray for the well-being of his fellow survivors, while T-Dog receives medical treatment for blood poisoning. Meanwhile Carl goes in and out of consciousness, and briefly recalls his encounter with the deer before going into a seizure. A distraught Lori opines to Rick about ending Carl’s suffering, but Rick insists on keeping him alive.

At the high school, Shane and Otis split up after struggling against a horde of walkers. Both injure their legs while escaping, slowing their progress down. Shane and Otis seemingly are out of options for survival. They begin to limp back to their truck, eventually running low on ammo.

Rick and Lori decide to do the operation without the necessary equipment. As they prepare for the operation, Shane arrives with the medical supplies, but without Otis. He claims that Otis sacrificed himself in order to save Carl. He is openly gay, has a boyfriend named Eric, and is the owner of Tuesday the Dalmatian.

Gianna grew up in the same neighborhood as Joe Cruz, who recommended her for the job after Foster left and is very protective of her. She quickly makes a good impression on her co-workers and enters a casual relationship with Blake Gallo. In the ninth-season episode “Double Red”, she transfers out of Firehouse 51 after being offered a spot at a new house for better advancement opportunities.
• Hanako Greensmith as Paramedic Violet Mikami (recurring season 8–9; main season 10–present). A paramedic from Firehouse 20 and Blake Gallo’s old rival from the fire academy. She and Gallo briefly date in season eight. Overview – Although he only appeared in two episodes, Otis was shown to be a kind, generous, capable, brave, and unselfish person. He was clearly loved very much by his wife Patricia and was a cherished friend to Hershel,,, and who were all devastated by his death.

Killing Otis was definitely a moment where Shane crossed a line, (and knew he crossed a line) that permanently ended the difference between civilization and the apocalypse in his own mind. On some level, Shane still was a moral guy, and this ate at him so badly that he eventually had a complete breakdown.

Season 2 – The group is stopped on the road by a massive car pileup on the highway, and further waylaid when a walker horde passes, which ends up with Sophia Peletier running off on her own for safety. The group starts searching for her, and Shane quietly tells Lori he plans to leave the group soon.

1. Rick, Carl, and Shane look for Sophia when Carl is accidentally shot by Otis, a farmhand from Hershel ‘s farm, and they rush him back to the farm, where Hershel attempts to operate and remove the bullet.
2. However, due to the severity of the wound, Hershel knows he will need more medicine, and Shane offers to go with Otis to recover this from a FEMA trailer located at a nearby school.

At the school, the two recover the supplies, but both end up hurting their legs. While trying to limp to safety from a walker horde, Shane shoots Otis in the leg, using him as bait for the walkers so that he can get away. Back at the farm, Shane brings the necessary medicine and claims Otis didn’t make it.

The others seem to accept Shane’s tale, but Shane proceeds to shave his head mostly to hide a patch of hair that Otis had ripped out after being shot. Dale and Daryl later confide that they both suspect Shane of playing a larger role in Otis’ death and suspect that Rick is aware as well. Shane’s behavior becomes more and more erratic following this incident, and he has further conflicts with Rick when he insists looking for Sophia is a waste of time.

Shane learns that Lori is pregnant with his child but Lori and Rick insist they will raise it as their own. When they learn that Hershel’s barn is full of walkers of his family and friends, Shane insists they kill the walkers to protect themselves, and then goes to open the barn doors himself, allowing the walkers loose against Rick’s and Hershel’s pleas.

• The group kills the walkers, including the reanimated body of Sophia, although Shane is shown to be equally devastated by her death.
• After this, Hershel goes missing and Rick sets out to search for him.
• Lori becomes concerned when Rick doesn’t return soon, and drives off to find them but gets in an accident.

Shane goes out to rescue Lori, giving him a chance to apologize to her, but she remains distant from him, especially after learning that Shane had lied to her in order to get Lori to go back to the farm. Rick returns with Hershel and another survivor, Randall, who was from another group that was scavenging for supplies and attacked Rick.

Randall was injured during the attack, and they brought him back to be healed, but Rick says that once he is well enough, they will drive him far away from the farm. Rick and Shane go together to deposit him at a distant site where Rick finally confronts Shane about Otis’ murder which Shane admits to.

Randall reveals that he knows Maggie, Hershel’s daughter. Shane believes that Randall knows the location of Hershel’s farm from this and tries to kill Randall, but Rick intervenes, leading to a loud conflict that draws a walker horde. The three escape, and lock Randall back up on the farm while the group struggles with what to do with him.

1. Shane still insists that they kill him, but the others, particularly Dale, remind them about losing their humanity in this decision.
2. When the group seems set on letting Randall live, Shane secretly takes Randall to the nearby woods, where he snaps Randall’s neck and kills him.
3. When Rick finds Randall missing, Shane arrives at the farm and tells the group Randall ambushed him and escaped.

Shane, Rick, Daryl, and Glenn take into the forest in pursuit of Randall, who they thought had escaped. The search party splits into two groups. Shane and Rick search a random area, while Glenn and Daryl follow Randall’s tracks. In the process, Daryl and Glenn find and put down the reanimated Randall who has turned despite only dying of a broken neck.

• Shane reveals to Rick that he killed Randall, after Rick concludes that Shane has lured him away from the group to kill him.

He’s not paralyzed — a successful surgical procedure instead gives him some hope. But it’s going to be a long road before he’s back on the truck. It would be for any of these characters, but for him in particular, it all feels a bit more complicated.

3. As usual, that’s one of the key messages here — this found family is so strong.
4. When Otis gets out of surgery, everyone at the firehouse goes to see him and be there for him.

And when he tries to push Cruz and Brett away, they insist on staying anyway, because they know better, and they sure as hell aren’t going to leave his side. Speaking of changes — Chief Grissom is back again, but this time, his purpose is mainly to let Boden know he’s suggested him for a promotion. There are a lot of complicated emotions for Boden at that moment. For one thing, it’s a compliment. It’s a testament to how good he is at his job, and it’s something he should feel good about. • What can it be like to feel that you’re no longer needed? He is, though, as Casey demonstrates while he practically begs with his eyes for help offering a pep talk to his team.
• And even if Boden did leave, knowing that Casey could run the firehouse, it’s only because of his training that he’d be able to do so.

I have to say, though, I don’t trust Grissom. He’s still up to something somehow — I can feel it. Or maybe I’m just paranoid. Overall, “The One That Matters Most” is a solid episode with a clear focus that also manages to bring in some humor. (Those poor women and their terrible food — I mean, how bad could that have really been?) The Otis storyline does feel a bit rushed considering how much he’s already gone through. Stella’s fake phone call from the landlord to not only get herself out of eating a terrible dinner, but also to pull in Severide so they could have some privacy? That’s probably one of the best moments from the entire episode. And I adore these two together. Stella is such a strong match for Severide.

The friendship they have reminds me of what he had with Shay, and adding a romantic connection to that works really well. Plus, we’re not the only ones who saw it coming. Even Gabby could figure out the two of them were sleeping together just based on Stella’s singing in the kitchen.

Initially, she has difficulty adjusting to city life due to her naiveté, as shown by the fact that she leaves cash out on the table with the windows open and rented an apartment in a neighborhood known for crime because the rent was cheap. She briefly dates Joe Cruz in season three and shares an apartment with Dawson prior to the latter’s marriage to Casey. After her third partner, Jessica Chilton, is fired, Sylvie is promoted to Paramedic in Charge (PIC) (season 4). She dates Dawson’s brother Antonio on and off from seasons five to six and is also briefly engaged to Chaplain Kyle Sheffield from seasons seven to eight. In the ninth-season finale, “No Survivors”, she begins dating Dawson’s husband Captain Matthew Casey, and in the tenth-season episode “Two Hundred”, she begins a long-distance relationship with him when he moves to Oregon, which she later ends in the eleventh-season premiere after feeling that they had grown apart by the distance. In the season 11 finale “Red Waterfall”, Casey returns to Chicago and proposes to Sylvie.
• Dora Madison as Paramedic in Charge Jessica “Chili” Chilton (recurring season 3; main season 4). She was brought in to replace Peter Mills as the new Paramedic in Charge (PIC). Her arrival is initially met with some frostiness from the rest of the crew since they were still getting over Mills’ sudden departure. She was previously with a firehouse in the West Side and is experienced in dealing with victims of major trauma. She dates Jimmy Borelli in the fourth season. She is later fired by Chief Boden during the fourth season after the death of her sister causes her to nearly kill a patient by giving her the wrong medicine and later to relapse into alcoholism. After she is fired, she calls Kelly Severide for help and he takes her to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.
• Steven R. McQueen as Firefighter Candidate Jimmy Borrelli (seasons 4–5). He was introduced in the fourth-season premiere “Let It Burn” as the new candidate assigned to Truck 81. He briefly dates Jessica “Chilli” Chilton in the fourth season and also briefly replaces her as a paramedic on Ambulance 61 after she is fired. After his brother dies in a collapsed building, he blames Chief Boden and transfers back to Truck 81. He is critically injured by an explosion early in the fifth season that leaves him requiring round-the-clock care, thus ending his firefighting career.
• Miranda Rae Mayo as Firefighter Stella Kidd: Truck 81 (recurring season 4; main season 5–present). Jimmy Borelli’s replacement on Truck 81. She briefly replaces Otis as driver in season six and permanently replaces him after his death in season eight. She is promoted to Lieutenant in the ninth-season episode “What Comes Next” after passing the exams. In the fourth-season finale, “Superhero”, she begins dating Lieutenant Kelly Severide. In the ninth-season episode “A White-Knuckle Panic”, they become engaged. In the last episode of tenth season, they get married.
• Annie Ilonzeh as Paramedic Emily Foster, Ambulance 61 (seasons 7–8). A former medical student who replaces Gabriela Dawson on Ambulance 61. In the eighth-season finale “51’s Original Bell”, she re-applies to medical school, and in the ninth-season premiere “Rattle Second City”, Brett says that she was accepted back and is working in a COVID-19 ward.
• Alberto Rosende as Firefighter Candidate Blake Gallo, Truck 81 (seasons 8–present). Firehouse 51’s latest recruit on Truck 81, replacing Brian “Otis” Zvonecek after his death. Gallo became a firefighter after he lost his entire family in a house fire.
• Daniel Kyri as Firefighter Candidate Darren Ritter, Engine 51 (recurring seasons 7–8; main season 9–present). After Herrmann forcibly transfers Firefighter Barns for his disrespect, Mouch suggests Ritter as a replacement. Previously with Engine 37, Mouch helped him when he froze up during a fire, and he ended up making his first save. He is openly gay, has a boyfriend named Eric, and is the owner of Tuesday the Dalmatian.
• Adriyan Rae as Paramedic Gianna Mackey, Ambulance 61 (season 9). Emily Foster’s replacement on Ambulance 61. Gianna grew up in the same neighborhood as Joe Cruz, who recommended her for the job after Foster left and is very protective of her. She quickly makes a good impression on her co-workers and enters a casual relationship with Blake Gallo. In the ninth-season episode “Double Red”, she transfers out of Firehouse 51 after being offered a spot at a new house for better advancement opportunities.
• Hanako Greensmith as Paramedic Violet Mikami (recurring season 8–9; main season 10–present). A paramedic from Firehouse 20 and Blake Gallo’s old rival from the fire academy. She and Gallo briefly date in season eight. In season nine, Chief Boden asks her to temporarily transfer to Firehouse 51 to fill the spot on Ambulance 61 after Gianna Mackey leaves and Brett shortly convinces her to transfer to Firehouse 51 permanently.
