But you know what I mean. Friend or foe, they’re coming for Hopper. Here’s the thing: Hopper might be alive, but only barely. We get a look at what’s happened to our chief, and it’s, uh, not great. After that heartbreaking nod in which Hopper sacrifices himself (which I honestly did not want to relive because I’m fragile), we learn Hop took a last-ditch nosedive away from the blast.

“You want to die for this woman?” they ask. But folks, they don’t know he would! Of course he would die for this woman! So Hopper survives all of this, and as a treat, they send him off to a work prison in Kamchatka, which one guy insists is the same as sending him to hell.

So that’s fun and cute. Meanwhile, in Lenora Hills, California, Murray Bauman has arrived to help Joyce figure out what this note means. Murray is concerned since there’s no proof Hopper is actually alive, but Joyce points to the fact that it’s signed “Enzo” and only she and Hopper knew they had set up a date at Enzo’s.

It has to be a signal from him. All they can do now is call the number on the note. The number goes to a pay phone, and it’s answered by some guy who wants them to bring $40,000 from Hopper’s trust for El to a man named Yuri in Alaska, who will then give “Enzo” the money.

Only then will he send Hopper back to them. They have two days. The phone call leaves them even more confused until Murray is able to translate a woman speaking in the background who they picked up on their recording of the call. She’s yelling at this Enzo guy and uses a slang term equivalent to calling cops “pigs.” It turns out Enzo is a prison guard in Kamchatka whom Hopper bribed.

It’s all a risk, but if this is the one shot at getting Hopper home, then Joyce and 40 grand are headed up to Alaska. Something tells me nothing about this will be easy, but, you know, one can hope. One can also hope they move quickly because it seems as though the people back in Hawkins may need some backup soon.

Thankfully, Max was right across the way the night Chrissy died. Not only did she see Eddie flee and notice he looked scared out of his mind while doing so, but she also noticed the lights flickering in an “Oh, no, this is Upside Down related, isn’t it?” kind of way.

She immediately tells Dustin, who knows with 100 percent certainty that Eddie couldn’t have done this (okay, his story about how Eddie was the only one nice to him and Mike when they started school is so sweet), a monster from another dimension is the only explanation.

And you know what? On this show, that makes total sense. Thanks to some help from Steve and Robin, some phone calls to Eddie’s friends, and the fact that our movie-rental choices might say a lot more about us than we want to let on, they track Eddie down in the boathouse of his drug dealer, Reefer Rick, near Lover’s Lake.

Eddie is petrified people think he could’ve killed Chrissy and is scared they won’t believe him when he tells them what really happened. They’re all like, “Try me” — which, sidenote, is kind of a badass thing to say. Eddie tells them what he saw happen to Chrissy, snapped bones and all, and they tell him about the Upside Down.

1. They know the two are related even though they were under the impression there was no way for the two worlds to “bleed” together with the gate closed.
2. They know Eddie is innocent.
3. Now all they have to do is figure out a way to prove it.

That’s right: Vecna claims his second victim, and it is Fred Benson, Nancy’s right hand at the school paper. Nancy and Fred head over to the trailer park to get the scoop on Chrissy’s death, but as soon as they pull in, Fred starts to have the same type of hallucinations Chrissy did.

1. His, however, have to do with some hit-and-run he was involved in.
2. Instead of haunting him about his weight, as Vecna did with Chrissy, Fred is haunted by the guilt of killing someone.
3. He follows the sound of the ticking clock into the woods alone (another teen walking into the woods alone? In this climate?!) and finds the same grandfather clock Chrissy saw, this time in a coffin.

Zombie people chant “Murderer!” at him. He finds himself in a deep grave with the corpse of the guy he killed. And then Vecna shows up. He remains very unpleasant to look at. When Fred asks what he wants, he tells him “to join me.” We see Fred run out into a deserted road, and it’s not long before he’s levitating.

His bones snap. His eyes are pulled into the back of his head. It’s over so quickly. Now why did Nancy leave Fred alone in the first place? Well, she was trying to get information from Eddie’s uncle. Mr. Munson has an interesting theory as to what really happened here: He tells Nancy about a man named Victor Creel, who, when Munson was a kid, went insane and killed his wife and kids.

They, too, were missing their eyes. Creel is alive, and though he was sent to the Pennhurst Mental Hospital, he could’ve escaped, Munson thinks. Like, of course this town has an insane asylum, and you can bet your butts we’re going to end up paying the place a visit at some point.

• But still! Victor Creel is a real lead — one that could end up helping Eddie.
• It is the silver lining in all of this.
• Well, the silver lining for us.
• There is no silver lining for Fred Benson.
• That boy is real dead.
• Mike arrives in California for spring break in a truly unhinged outfit, and El continues her charade of pretending she loves her new life.

She’s friends with Angela! She parties at the roller rink! Mike learns the hard way that his girlfriend is lying: He watches as Angela brutally bullies El in the middle of the rink, having everyone swarm around her to the tune of “Wipe Out” until another kid dumps a milkshake on her.

2. There are a lot of disgusting things that happen on this show, but this one had my stomach churning.

Volume 1 of Stranger Things season 4 only featured four deaths, with the very first being given the most screen time. Episode 1 of Stranger Things season 4 saw the death of cheerleader Chrissy Cunningham due to Vecna’s curse, with the murders of Hawkins High Schoolers Fred Benson (Logan Riley Bruner) and Patrick McKinney (Myles Truitt) following in episodes 2 and 5, respectively.

Back in California, Stranger Things ‘ characters witnessed the death of ” Unknown Hero Agent Man,” who was killed by the military while trying to protect Stranger Things ‘ Byers family and Mike (Finn Wolfhard). When Chrissy was first introduced in Stranger Things season 4, it was assumed that she would follow the series’ stereotype of popular teens at Hawkins High.

While her boyfriend Jason (Mason Dye) surely fit the mold of an antagonistic jock, cheerleader Chrissy was given far more nuance in just one episode. From her trauma with her mother scrutinizing her weight and a heartwarming drug deal with Eddie “The Freak” Munson (Joseph Quinn), Chrissy was given an unusual amount of story focus and audience investment for a character who would be killed off by the end of the first episode.

While her death still remained an important motivation for the basketball team in Stranger Things season 4, her story and impact could have been far greater had the Duffer brothers waited at least one or two more episodes before killing her off. One of the biggest obstacles for Stranger Things season 4 is its lengthy episodes, Chrissy’s death in episode 1 is meant to be an immediate precursor to Max’s impending fate by episode 4, but it ends up feeling like eons have passed by the time the climactic “Dear Billy” concludes.

This certainly lessens the impact of her death, especially since Max was the only returning character to have even a minor interaction with Chrissy before Vecna killed her. Chrissy’s death still should have occurred before “Dear Billy,” but had it come in episode 2 or 3 rather than the premiere, her fate would have been received with far more urgency.

Had Chrissy survived long enough to increase the connection between herself and Stranger Things ‘ Eddie Munson as well as the rest of the characters, her death also would have felt like a far more significant blow to the teens. Take, for instance, Alexei (Alec Utgoff), who only received three episodes’ worth of prominent screentime before he was killed, but had enough of an established dynamic with the other characters that his death became the most heartbreaking of Stranger Things season 3.

While Patrick and Fred would also be killed by Vecna’s curse in Stranger Things season 4, vol.1, Chrissy was the only one who was made multi-dimensional before Vecna killed her, but still didn’t have enough time for the other characters to fully feel the impact of her death. The Duffer brothers themselves have even admitted that they regret killing off Chrissy so quickly.

The Stranger Things co-creators revealed that they had already killed the character before shooting the scene with her and Eddie in the woods, which was the moment that truly had viewers rooting for her to survive. After seeing the chemistry between Eddie and Chrissy in this scene, the Duffers were reportedly confronted with a ” what have we done ” moment, suggesting they also realized that her death could have been far more gut-wrenching had she survived for a little while longer.

Chrissy’s death was still necessary for Stranger Things season 4’s terrifying Vecna storyline, but a delay in her death would have made the character’s influence even more effective. Was Vecna always evil?

A Troubled Henry Creel Moves to Hawkins – Netflix Vecna was not always a hideous beast of the Upside Down. He was once a troubled child in the real world named Henry Creel. Henry’s “problems” caused his family to move to Hawkins in 1959. However, the exact issues that led to the relocation are unclear.

Victor Creel told Robin and Nancy his son was “sensitive.” Meanwhile, when speaking to Eleven in the lab, Henry said “something was wrong” with him. “All the teachers and the doctors said I was broken.” Unable to find help for their child, his parents thought “a change of scenery, a fresh start in Hawkins, might just cure” whatever it was that ailed their son.

Instead the town became the site of their doom. Not long after moving into their new house Henry found a nest of black widow spiders. With that discovery came a new “sense of purpose” that showed how dark the young boy’s soul was before he killed his family.

He believed people simply waited to die “while performing in a silly terrible play, day after day.” He could not live like that and refused to.

It seems that the reason why Vecna wasn’t killing for the seven years after the Hawkins Lab massacre was because he was waiting to become more powerful as the Mind Flayer and Demogorgons took more victims, as he was likely weakened after being thrown into the dimension. When Number One revealed his true identity to Eleven in Stranger Things season 4’s flashbacks, he explained that he became more and more powerful with each victim he took. While Henry Creel had taken over a dozen victims during the Hawkins Lab massacre, his fall into the Upside Down depicted him being struck with lightning and slowly morphing into the Upside Down’s Vecna, hinting that it would take time before he could once again reach the height of his power.

Since Dustin refers to Vecna as the realm’s ” five-star general,” it’s likely that he sent the Mind Flayer to take more victims that could feed his powers and grow his strength through the alternate dimension, as deceased humans in the Upside Down, like Vecna, are shown to be attached to its structural vines.

Perhaps these vines that travel throughout the victims are actually feeding their lives (and trauma) to Vecna, making him stronger over the years. There isn’t necessarily a pattern to Vecna’s kill cycles to explain why he had to wait seven years. After Henry Creel killed his mother and sister in 1959, he couldn’t take any more lives until 20 years later in 1979, but this was only when Eleven removed his Soteria chip.

• It then took Vecna seven years before he could kill again in 1986, so this gap between kills is more than likely explained by a necessity to regain his infiltrative powers.
• As Vecna is seemingly building an army of his victims inside of his mindscape ( Vecna’s red smoke area ), Stranger Things season 4’s villain is building up his strength for a massive takeover in Hawkins.

Why does Vecna break bones?

Signs and symptoms – The ‘curse’ begins with the victim having severe headaches, nosebleeds and nightmares regarding any traumatic event in their past. Eventually, the cursed will have waking hallucinations, often of other people taunting them about their secrets. Chrissy sees the clock embedded in a tree Fred sees the clock embedded inside a coffin Max sees the clock at Hawkins High Patrick sees the clock at Chrissy’s funeral In some cases, such as with Max Mayfield, the victim will then hallucinate themselves entering Vecna’s mindscape, The deconstructed version of the Creel House present in the mindscape, as well as the grandfather clock and black widow spiders, are all derived from Vecna’s former identity as the human Henry Creel.

After a certain period of time, Vecna will finally kill the victim by placing them into a comatose-like state, in which they will be unable to respond to outside stimuli. While in this trance, Vecna will stalk his victim, chasing them through his mind, the victim’s mind, and whatever strange psychic realms lie in-between.

If Vecna can overwhelm their victim with fear, and keep them from resisting, their fate is almost certainly sealed. In the real world, he makes the victim levitate while in their trance, before snapping their bones and neck, and crushing their eyes. The murder site then becomes a small gate into the Upside Down, as part of a long term goal to apparently bleed both dimensions into one.

5) Chrissy – Following the departure of Eleven from Hawkins and the loss of her powers, Henry/Vecna made his return in 1986. His first victim was Chrissy Cunningham. Vecna targeted Chrissy by using her depression and eating disorder against her in his visions. Chrissy was killed in Eddie Munson’s trailer, and the first gate was opened on the ceiling.

Ross added, “we had already killed Chrissy when we shot that.” “The scene came alive in a way that was just so beautiful,” Matt continued.

Chrissy Netflix This is the second time that the Duffer brothers have spoken about regretting killing off a character they liked, and they bring him up yet again here. That would be Bob, played by Sean Astin, who died two seasons back now: “When we killed Bob in Season 2, I didn’t want to do that. We had fallen in love with both the character and Sean Astin.

And Sean didn’t want to die. Winona Ryder didn’t want him to die.” However, they claim that these two may return in uh, some form: “But we’ll find something else to do with Grace, something else to do with Sean.” I’m not sure whether the implication there is that these characters could return in season 5 of Stranger Things itself as some sort of flashback or dream, or if they mean other, future projects that they work on after Stranger Things.

1. We did already see the return of Billy, post-death, in the now famous fourth episode, Dear Billy, where he appears to his sister and tries to convince her that she was actually relieved that he died.
2. As for Chrissy, I did find her to be a standout when she first appeared, as she was given a surprising amount of depth for being a brand new character, and actress Grace Van Dien gave a great performance despite not being around that long.

When it reached her, it touched her face and told her to stop crying. The creature told Chrissy that it was time for her suffering to end and reached its claw over her face.

Ultimately, it is revealed in Stranger Things season 4’s finale that the reason why Vecna was killing Hawkins teenagers was to create a massive gate that merges the Right Side Up with the Upside Down – and he specifically needed four bodies to do so.

Max first encounters Vecna’s Mindscape in the Stranger Things episode “Dear Billy,” where she finds psychological iterations of Chrissy and Fred’s disfigured bodies entrapped by vines in trunk-like structures. The bodies found in Vecna’s Mindscape are only his recent victims – Vecna’s sister and mother, along with the Hawkins Lab massacre victims, aren’t seen.

This suggests that the bodies of Vecna’s recent victims, even as figurative Mindscape creations, are needed for a deeper purpose. Understanding why Vecna keeps his victims further helps explain why he was killing them in the first place. After all, Stranger Things’ Vecna waited seven years before he started killing again, and his recent Hawkins victims differentiate from his family and the Hawkins lab victims because they’re completely unknown to Vecna.

Why did Chrissy die so early?

Chrissy’s death was vital for Max’s survival – Even though the drug deal scene in the woods between Eddie and Chrissy took place fairly early in Stranger Things four, it was filmed pretty late in the process which meant her fate was already sealed. Matt Duffer said: “We always have those moments of ‘what have we done?’.” The Duffer brothers said Chrissy had to die because otherwise Eddie wouldn’t learn about the Upside Down and the rest of the group wouldn’t be aware of the fact bad things were happening again. Max’s survival, via Netflix Matt Duffer said the drug-deal scene “came alive in a way that was just so beautiful”. He says: “It was just one of those beautiful scenes where we were able to have two cameras rolling capturing them simultaneously. Joe was doing a lot of stuff spontaneously and we were getting these amazing reactions from Grace.” Apparently fans can expect some sort of endgame in volume two.
