What do Dutch license plates mean?
Numbering schemes – The current Dutch license plate system uses black letters on a light-reflecting yellow background, although white reflecting letters on a dark-blue background are allowed for vehicles built before 1977. Since 2000, the blue band with the European flag and NL has been mandatory for all vehicles except vehicles built before 1977. Dutch license plates can be formatted as follows:

Why do Florida cars not have front license plates?
Trooper Steve answers viewer questions – ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions about the rules of the road every week, helping Central Florida residents become better drivers by being better educated.
Trooper Steve was asked, “Why does Florida not have a front and rear license plate?” He said the exact reasoning remains a mystery, but Florida drivers should remember the more things that are issued to us, the more we have to pay out of pocket. “If Florida decided to go to a two-plate system, we would ultimately be paying more to register our cars.
Florida has had a single license plate in the back of your vehicle since 1922,” Trooper Steve said. “From 1918 to 1922, Florida did have the two-plate system. However, that is definitely a thing of the past.” Trooper Steve said 18 states in the U.S. operate on a single-plate system.
And if you’re a Florida resident and registered with a Florida license plate, don’t worry about traveling in a two-plate state. Since you’re registered in Florida, you are not required to have two license plates. He also said vanity plates are allowed on the front of your car since Florida does not recognize the front plate area as a required display for a license plate.

License Plate Disposal – For your protection, please remember license plates belong to the state and must be returned if the decal on the plate is unexpired and insurance is not maintained. You should dispose of Florida license plates via one of the following methods:
- In person at a motor vehicle service center ; or
- Via mail to a motor vehicle service center along with a request to cancel and recycle the license plate; or
- In the event that a license plate is lost/destroyed/stolen, please complete this affidavit and mail to a motor vehicle service center,
Why returning plates should be important to you:
- Financial Responsibility sanctions can occur once insurance is dropped from the vehicle if the license plate is still actively registered and associated to your vehicle. Failure to surrender a valid license plate when your insurance is cancelled or expires will result in suspension of your driver license.
- When you dispose of a plate by turning it into a tax collector’s office you will receive a receipt showing that the plate was surrendered. If the initial registration fee was paid for the vehicle that the plate was on, that receipt can then be used for credit towards a future vehicle registration to keep you from paying the initial registration fee when you purchase a new vehicle.
- So that scammers do not attach your plate to their vehicle and go through tolls, red light cameras, or be used on vehicles that are part of a crime. When this happens, the name and address on file will be yours.
