Ah, material girl, thanks to TikTok, it’s so much more than just a Madonna or Saucy Santana song lyric. But what exactly does it mean, and how did the term start trending in the first place? We’ve got all the answers to all your questions, including how you can live your very best material girl life (we are living in a material world, after all). Keep scrolling to get the inside scoop!
- “Material girls” are people who really love luxurious things, and love to brag about some of their high-end treasures.
- The “material girl” TikTok trend started in 2021 featuring Saucy Santana’s song of the same name. A different “material girl” trend surfaced in 2023, featuring Madonna’s song.
- Channel your inner material girl by loading up your wardrobe with bright pinks and pastels, along with fancy accessories (like diamonds and pearls, knock-off or otherwise).
- “Material girls” are independent people who like the luxurious things in life. Material girls likewell, material things! They put a lot of value on their physical possessions, and like to let everyone know exactly what they have. Material girls are seen by some as stubborn and tenacious—they have their sights set on what they want, and they aren’t afraid to do whatever it takes to reach out and grab it.
- The term “material girl” comes from the iconic 1984 Madonna hit of the same name, though it’s received more recent publicity thanks to Saucy Santana’s 2020 track “Material Girl.”
- The term “material gworl” has also gained popularity because of the way Saucy Santana raps the phrase in his song.
- The phrase “material girl” applies to everyone, including “material boys”—your gender identity is irrelevant.

- 1 TikToks featuring Saucy Santana’s “Material Girl” Using a bass-boosted version of Saucy Santana’s track, some users take the time to treat themselves to something nice or to brandish all of the expensive things they have. Other TikTokers take a more sardonic approach by showing off items they have that are decidedly not high-end (like inexpensive clothes, a practical car, etc.).
- This TikTok trend first started taking off in late 2021 when a Roblox TikToker made a post featuring an edited, bass-boosted clip of Saucy Santana’s track.
- 2 TikToks featuring Madonna’s “Material Girl” In their posts, TikTokers feature a video of their middle-aged or older parents currently, along with the caption, “My mom/dad said she rejected dozens of guys/girls in her day. I didn’t believe her/him until” After, the TikTok features attractive photos of the parent back when they were a young adult. A clip from Madonna’s “Material Girl” plays in the background for all these videos.
- This TikTok trend started getting more traction in early 2023.

Do you have a pair of Louis Vuitton loafers sitting in your closet, or a Chanel bag just waiting to be perched on your arm for your next shopping trip? - 2 Live life with confidence and tenacity. Material girls are sure of themselves and know exactly what they want in life—and most importantly, they aren’t afraid to do whatever it takes to get it. In the coming days and weeks, put your most confident foot forward as you take charge a little bit more in your day-to-day routine.
- 3 Add pastels and bright pinks to your wardrobe. A pastel color palette gives off an undeniably sophisticated, refined, and stylish vibe, which are essential qualities of any material girl. Bright pink garments (like a chic blouse or skirt) also pass the vibe check for any material girlies out there.

- Make heads turn at your next formal event by slipping into a long pastel or pink dress, along with some eye-catching shoes.
- 4 Accessorize with a pair of, Nothing captures the confidence and charm of a material girl quite like the right pair of sunglasses. A set of heart-shaped glasses propped above your hairline can really sell the idea that you’re a material girl living in a material world.
- 5 Dress up with diamonds, pearls, and a fancy purse. Nothing spells luxury like diamonds and pearls, but it’s totally understandable if you don’t have a lot of cash to spare on expensive accessories. Not to worry—complete your material girl look with a convincing string of fake pearls and diamond jewelry. Finish off your look with an expensive-looking purse (bonus points if it’s a designer brand).

Is materialism a bad thing?
Now that we’re a week into 2015, most of us have come down from the buzz of the holidays and returned to life as normal. And after spending weeks, if not months, obsessing over the gifts and goodies that awaited us in December, some of us may feel a post-holiday hangover, where we realize that we’re probably no happier than we were before we got that new flat screen TV or cappuccino maker. Why is this the case—and how can we avoid falling into the unhappiness trap of materialism before the next holiday season rolls around? Advertisement X One answer has been emerging from social science: Cultivate a mindset of gratitude. Gratitude is proving to be about much more than the occasional “thank you.” Instead, the principles of thanksgiving give rise to a unique way of seeing the world. What is vanilla girl aesthetic?
We all know and love the “coastal grandmother,” but there’s a new girl on the TikTok block. Meet: the “vanilla girl.” She’s minimalist, wearing primarily white and cream shades (hello, “sad beige moms” ). But this new aesthetic goes beyond clothing — it’s a whole lifestyle that leans into the joys of comfort and luxury.
From wardrobe essentials in a neutral palette to make up must-haves that achieve a barely-there look to scented candles and cozy bedding, the trend shows vanilla doesn’t always have to be boring. While the origin of the TikTok trend is unclear, fashion stylist Liz Teich tells TODAY.com it draws from the “clean girl” aesthetic and “balletcore” that were recently circulating on the social media platform.
(Like the name implies, balletcore is all about dressing like a ballerina — no dancing skills required.) “I think people are looking for something that is just a little bit more natural, but also styled and minimal as well,” she says. “This is still sweet and neutral.” When executed properly, Teich says the simplistic look can be transformative. Nora Brannock (unintentionally) nailed the vanilla girl aesthetic. Netflix “It just looks so expensive and elevated and I think that’s why people gravitate towards because it’s a really easy way to look elevated,” she adds. In a reel posted to her Instagram account @thenewyorkstylist, Teich shares her take on the trend by mixing in dark shoes and accessories to ground an otherwise all-white look.
- But in the same post, Teich points to the controversy surrounding the vanilla girl aesthetic, noting that the name isn’t welcoming to everyone.
- I’m all for wearing winter whites (shades of creams) and this really isn’t anything new and can work on anyone, but there’s got to be a more inclusive name on this approachable minimalist trend,” she writes.
TikTok users echo these concerns that this romanticized lifestyle may not be for all. Creator @olivialayne6, who captioned her video “the bagel aesthetic” (fitting, no?), asks TikTok users when enough is enough. “The name and the examples being used for it is suggesting that the aesthetic is about being pretty thin white women,” she says.
- Not to mention that the vanilla girl aesthetic is basically just another way to describe the “clean girl, the soft girl, the dewy girl, that girl.” “I’m just asking how many different ways are y’all going to come up with to say that you like beige? We got it the first time.
- We got it the second time,” she adds.
Tiktok creator @lauraghiacy also addressed the trend’s lack of inclusivity. “This trend favors white, blonde women,” she says. “In fact, it seemingly excludes anybody that falls out of this very narrow perception of beauty.” Likewise, the trend has become tied to thinness.
- I’m waiting to see somebody in a larger body have the viral success that their thin counterparts have had,” she adds.
- Despite its limiting nature, the hashtag #vanillagirl has garnered more than 650 million views on TikTok, cementing its popularity on the social media platform — and, well, society at large.
That is, until the next girl comes to town. Ryan Hudgins Ryan Hudgins is an editorial intern at TODAY.com. She is currently pursuing a major in Journalism at the University of Richmond. In her free time, Ryan enjoys reading, running, hiking and surfing.
Who were the 3 Mean Girls?
Plot – Sixteen-year-old Cady Heron and her parents return to the United States after 12 years in Africa, settling in, After an intimidating first day at North Shore High School, Cady befriends outsiders Janis Ian and Damian Leigh, who explain the school’s various and warn her to avoid the “Plastics”, a group consisting of wealthy but insecure Gretchen Wieners, sweet but dimwitted Karen Smith, and “” Regina George.
- When Cady is invited to sit with the Plastics at lunch, Janis persuades her to infiltrate the ruling clique.
- Cady becomes attracted to Aaron Samuels, a senior in her calculus class and Regina’s ex-boyfriend, and learns about the “Burn Book”, a scrapbook the Plastics fill with cruel rumors about students and faculty.
Regina offers to talk to Aaron on Cady’s behalf, but instead kisses him in front of her and resumes their relationship. Feeling betrayed, Cady fully commits to Janis’ plan to ruin Regina’s reputation. Regina tells Cady that she and Janis were once friends until she accused Janis of being a lesbian and ostracized her.
After their attempts to sabotage Regina’s wardrobe backfire, Cady, Janis, and Damian plan to turn Gretchen against her. They make it seem as though Regina has sent “-grams” to Cady and Karen while excluding Gretchen. Regina further humiliates Gretchen during their dance performance at the Winter Talent Show, leading Gretchen to tell Cady all of Regina’s embarrassing secrets.
Cady informs Aaron that Regina is cheating on him, prompting them to break up, and tricks Regina into eating nutrition bars that cause her to gain weight. Following a sharp drop in Regina’s reputation, she’s replaced by Cady as the new “queen bee”. Cady throws a house party while her parents are away, and drunkenly admits to Aaron that she’s been deliberately failing math class to make him help her, but he rebukes her for becoming as manipulative and image-obsessed as Regina.
- Janis and Damian confront Cady for lying to them about the party and remaking herself in Regina’s image.
- Cady accuses Janis of being in love with her and Janis declares her a “mean girl”, renouncing their friendship.
- Realizing Cady’s betrayal, Regina retaliates by distributing the contents of the Burn Book throughout school, inciting chaos among the girls of the junior class.
She avoids suspicion by inserting insults about herself, and blame is placed on Cady, Gretchen, and Karen. To restore order, Principal Duvall and math teacher Ms. Norbury gather the female junior students in the gym to apologize to each other. Regina insults Janis’ sexuality, prompting Janis to reveal her entire plan to destroy Regina’s reputation as the students cheer.
- Regina storms out, pursued by an apologetic Cady, and is struck by a school bus, fracturing her spine. When Ms.
- Norbury is investigated as a drug dealer due to comments Cady wrote in the Burn Book, Cady takes full blame for the book.
- She’s shunned by her peers and distrusted by her own parents, but gradually returns to her old self.
She joins the school at the state finals, answering the tiebreaker correctly and winning the championship. The team arrives at the Spring Fling dance, where Cady is elected queen, but declares that all her classmates are wonderful in their own way, snapping the plastic tiara and distributing the pieces to other girls in the crowd, including Janis, Gretchen, and Regina.
- She rekindles her friendship with Janis and Damian, makes up with Aaron, and reaches a truce with the Plastics.
- The Plastics disband at the beginning of the new school year; Regina joins the lacrosse team to positively manage her anger, Karen becomes the school weather reporter, and Gretchen joins the “Cool Asians” clique.
Aaron graduates and attends while starting a relationship with Cady. Reflecting on the relative social peace that has taken over North Shore High, Cady notices a trio of new “Junior Plastics”, and imagines them being hit by a bus.
What are Mean Girls rules?
Mean Girls: The Plastics’ Rules Being Plastic is hard work. There are a lot of rules you have to follow if you want access to their lunch table. Check out this incomplete list: You can’t wear a tank top two days in a row.You can only wear your hair in a ponytail once a week.
- Jeans or track pants may only be worn on Fridays.
- Of course, they also wear pink on Wednesday.
- These rules, and their de facto Wednesday uniform are symbols of The Plastics’ unity.
- All three of them (four, once Cady joins the gang) donning pink every Wednesday says to their classmates, “We’re together.
All for one; one for all. Oh, and also, you can’t sit with us.” To that end, wearing pink on Wednesdays also represents the fact that they’re the only ones deemed worthy of being in the clique—kind of a “We’re wearing pink, and you’re not” deal. While it doesn’t happen in the film, we’re willing to bet that if Bethany or Jessica Lopez or—gasp!—Janis started wearing pink every Wednesday, too, Regina would blow a well-manicured gasket.
- The Plastics’ code of conduct is also a symbol of Regina’s control over Gretchen, Karen, and, for a while, Cady.
- In reality, the rules are arbitrary, but, as we noted a moment ago, following them means being part of the group.
- Gretchen and Karen are more than willing to follow whatever dumb rule Regina makes up if it means they get to remain part of the social elite.
The rules’ lack of actual meaning is reinforced when Regina wears sweatpants on a Monday, after her all-carb diet has caused her to pack on a few pounds, and Gretchen reminds her that sweatpants on a Monday are a no-no, and Regina therefore can’t sit with him.
Who has power in Mean Girls?
Alpha groups still have in-group politics. – Cady alludes to this when describing how she found herself desiring Alpha Regina’s approval despite hating her. (This is a very common trope. I’m reminded of the toxic relationship between Cathy and Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights, and well, abusive relationships everywhere. Their sexuality and their attractiveness is their chief source of social currency. The Plastics maintain their alpha status through attention, by being sexually desired by everybody else. They’re effectively the “tip of the spear”, desired and envied and loathed by everyone. It’s interesting to study the social dynamics within the Plastics themselves. Regina George’s character was partly inspired by Alec Baldwin’s character in Glengarry Glen Ross, a super-alpha, manipulative Wall-Street hotshot. She’s attractive, and more importantly, she’s the most socially intelligent. That’s what gives her the power to manipulate others so well. “Walk home, bitches,” she goes, when her clueless followers side with Cady instead of her, and attempt to use her arbitrary rules against her- rules that she invented to control them and keep them in line. Poor clueless Plastics don’t realize not to fuck with a Sociopath. She demonstrates her sociopathic intelligence several times, and it’s clear that she derives pleasure from this. The moment that spoke to me the most was when she phoned Cady with “I know your secret,” and then went on to say “Don’t you hate Gretchen for ratting on you?” while Gretchen was on the phone. Gretchen was in on this conversation- Regina’s way of keeping all her peons in check by playing them off of each other. She deliberately plays people off against each other, manipulating them and their insecurities. She lies to Aaron about Cady. I’d go so far as to say that she built the burn book all along as blackmail capital- it’s a Dead Man’s Switch, which she can use as leverage against anybody who contemplates backstabbing her. Gathering Blackmail Material 101 It’s like Batman keeping kryptonite in case he ever has to kill Superman. They know a lot about everybody, they have superior information- people like Gretchen (clueless) seek Regina’s approval, and freely divulge information to earn that (supeficial) approval. The conflict is resolved by a random act of God- the antagonist gets hit by a bus. and decides not to antagonize anymore. This is the “near death” trope- when a player experiences significant trauma and decides they don’t want to play anymore. This is a bit of a copout, and probably an artistic choice for the sake of the limitations of the movie.
- Think about this- what would’ve happened if Regina didn’t get hit by the bus? Even if Cady decided to “quit the plastic scene”, Cady’s continued existence would threaten Regina’s dominance (as long as Regina cares about her social status).
- So Regina would have no choice but to decimate Cady altogether.
It took a bus to take her out and make her decide that she didn’t want to play.
