Chapter 2: Hunger games – The good news, for at least some of Europe’s farmers, is that climate change can deliver winners. Warmer winters, longer growing seasons and more rain mean parts of Europe, in particular the north, will produce more food than today.

In Southern Europe, the IPCC draft warns, more than a third of the population will have less water than they need. If temperatures rise by 3 degrees, regions suffering from droughts in Europe could double from 13 percent to 26 percent,

The areas bordering the Mediterranean will be hardest hit, with the proportion of land regularly experiencing droughts expanding from 28 percent to 49 percent in the most extreme cases. Dry spells there would also last longer — nearly half of every year, up from two months today. Some parts of the Iberian Peninsula could experience drought for more than seven months every year.

The loss of rain will make it harder to grow many staple crops in Southern Europe. Farmers will see traditional crops flee north ahead of the advancing Sahara, which is already jumping the Mediterranean Sea. At 2 degrees warming, agricultural biomes will shift north at a rate of 25 kilometers to 135 kilometers a decade.

• Yields of wheat in Southern Europe — where successive civilizations have cultivated it for thousands of years — will fall by 12 percent while growing 5 percent in the north.

The year 2022 was met with extreme heat, drought and wildfires across the continent, but the expanded use of renewable energy offers some hope for the future.

• As temperatures soared across the continent in 2022, sea surface warming reached new highs, glacier melt was unprecedented, and Europe experienced its hottest summer ever recorded.
• Several countries also faced their warmest year on record, including the UK, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland.
• The most severe heatwave occurred in mid-July, with record-breaking temperatures in many locations, including the for the first time on the 19 July.
• Professor Petteri Taalas, WMO Secretary-General, says, ‘In 2022, many countries in western and south-western Europe had their warmest year on record.’
• ‘Summer was the hottest ever recorded: the high temperatures exacerbated the severe and widespread drought conditions, fuelled violent wildfires that resulted in the second largest burnt area on record, and led to thousands of heat-associated excess deaths.’

Why does Europe get so cold?

Why is it so cold across Europe at the moment? – For the answer, we need to look east, towards the vast plains of Russia. Currently there is an intense area of high pressure over much of Europe, extending from Siberia in the east to the UK in the west.

This high pressure means clear, cloud-free days and, crucially, cloud-free nights. In the summer this same set up brought a heatwave to much of eastern Europe. But when it happens at this time of year, a heatwave could not be further from the truth. In the summer, the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun.

Summer days are longer than summer nights and the angle of the Sun in the sky means that a high proportion of the Sun’s energy falls directly on the Earth’s surface. In the winter, the opposite is true. Nights are longer than days (more and more so the further north you go) and the tilt of the Earth’s axis means that the northern hemisphere is furthest away from the Sun.

The result of this is that the Sun’s rays deliver more of a “glancing blow” to the Earth’s surface in the northern hemisphere, resulting in a less powerful heating effect. Less heating for a shorter time means that we would expect the temperature to be lower – and that’s what we see; winter is colder than summer.

The reason for this lies in the intensity of the high pressure. High pressure means that air from aloft is being pushed downwards. As air descends, it dries out. This results in little or no cloud. By night, cloud acts as a blanket, stopping heat that is in the ground radiating away into the sky.

So at the moment, we have short days, low heating of the ground, long nights and nothing to stop the heat from the ground escaping. If these conditions last for a long time, it just gets colder and colder. That is where we are at the moment – the intensity of the high means no cloud, no cloud means colder and colder temperatures.

In the northern hemisphere, air flows clockwise around a high-pressure system. The current set-up, with high pressure over Russia, means that our air is coming from the east, bringing low temperatures with it. The path that this air takes is crucial to whether it is warmed up or cooled down on its journey.
