That’s what Dumbledore tells Harry he sees in the Mirror of Erised during their first ever face-to-face conversation in Philosopher’s Stone, As an introduction to Dumbledore it’s pretty telling: an evasive answer, yes, but one given kindly and with his classic, whimsical sense of humour that stops Harry asking any more questions.

Still, it’s a long time before we discover what the Mirror really reveals about Dumbledore’s deepest desires, given how careful he is never to reveal too much to Harry. This is a pattern established early on, with Dumbledore taking charge of Harry’s future in the immediate aftermath of his parents’ death.

But of all the characters we meet in Philosopher’s Stone it’s hard not to look at Dumbledore, in particular, without factoring in everything we later learn. In Order of the Phoenix – five years after the events in Philosopher’s Stone, and only after the death of Sirius – he reveals his reasons for leaving Harry with the Dursleys and explains his motivation for not telling Harry the truth about why Voldemort had tried to kill him as a baby.

Would knowing these things earlier have given Harry a better sense of how Voldemort might try to entrap him? Might it even have stopped him rushing to the Department of Mysteries, and so prevented Sirius’s death? Who knows, but it’s in Order of the Phoenix that Dumbledore starts to acknowledge to Harry that he may have made some mistakes.

And yet when he reveals the reasons behind his decisions, it seems that it was all pretty obvious from the outset. He cares about Harry. His primary objective is to keep Harry safe and as happy as possible. Dumbledore’s thoughts on the Mirror of Erised make this pretty clear. But these aren’t questions we thought to wonder about in Philosopher’s Stone – and nor, it seems, did Harry. It’s testament to Dumbledore’s character that none of us really doubted the wisdom of his choices, even without the full explanations that came later.

Yet there are moments in Philosopher’s Stone that hint at the darker days to come. Dumbledore’s words to Harry about the Mirror are not to dwell on dreams and forget to live. Again he could be speaking of his own history – his obsession with the Deathly Hallows, perhaps, and his neglect of his family – but he is also advising Harry, who will become so entwined with Voldemort’s brain that he starts to dream his dreams, something Dumbledore tries to get him to resist when he instructs Snape to teach Harry Occlumency in Order of the Phoenix,

Dumbledore sits down on the floor next to Harry to begin the first of many lessons about the effects of powerful magic on people. Dumbledore’s concern for Harry becomes a healing part of his growing up at Hogwarts. For instance, the first thing Harry sees after his confrontation with Quirrell/Voldemort is Dumbledore’s face.2 Dumbledore must have cared enough to keep a bedside vigil until Harry awoke.

As Harry grows up, Dumbledore’s wisdom gets the two of them through some difficult revelations together. Dumbledore has to coach the fourteen-year-old Harry to reveal all the grim details of Voldemort’s return in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, A year later, they survive a battle of wills in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix to come to greater understanding.3 Harry learns some of his most powerful lessons from Dumbledore ‘ good and evil are chosen and events have meanings that depend on interpretation.

When Ron Weasley laments that Dumbledore’s gift of the Deluminator meant that he anticipated Ron’s departure, it is from Dumbledore’s graciousness and wisdom that Harry clarifies for Ron: “No. He must’ve known you’d always want to come back.” 4 It is understandable that Harry and the reader would put Dumbledore up on a pedestal.

But even great wizards like Dumbledore are bound to fall off. Harry first realizes Dumbledore is not the perfect savior he wanted him to be during their exchange at the end of the Order of the Phoenix,5 It begins with a scene familiar to many parents and fifteen-year-olds. Harry screams “You don’t understand how I feel!” only to be answered by his parent who not only understands, but names the feelings Harry cannot name for himself.6 Dumbledore allows Harry to be justifiably angry and destructive in response to the death of Sirius Black.

Attempting to alleviate Harry’s guilt, Dumbledore explains his own series of faulty decisions. He expected Sirius to stay hidden, 7 hoping it would keep him alive.8 He admits having been wrong about Snape’s ability to overcome his hatred of James in trying to teach Harry about Occlumency.9 He regrets both leaving Harry with the Dursleys 10 and not telling Harry about the prophecy.11 He even apologizes for keeping his distance from Harry during the year.

• He feared his love for Harry would make Harry vulnerable to possession by Voldemort.12 Dumbledore reveals how thoroughly he loves Harry.
• Harry is brave, and Dumbledore is proud as any father would be.13 More than that, Dumbledore succumbs to a parent’s weakness; he cares more about Harry’s happiness and wellbeing than the wizarding world he is trying to protect.14 As a teacher and headmaster, Dumbledore has always been able to be a little removed from his students.

However, as guardian of a boy he looks after so closely, he does not just give up objectivity; Harry’s happiness becomes his chief concern. The “greater good” is nameless and faceless, but Harry is a real boy who needs his protection and yet has more heart and soul than Dumbledore ever imagined.15 In naming his faults, he shows Harry that he, Dumbledore, is quite fallible.

Like most teenagers, Harry doesn’t want to see his father’s weaknesses.16 Harry wants Dumbledore to be strong so he can rebel against him while still being protected. Dumbledore expresses the kind of regrets every loving parent knows well. Parents make decisions for their children’s wellbeing only to discover those decisions do not turn out as well as they had hoped and planned.

Indeed, they sometimes go badly awry. At the same time, these admissions acknowledge that Harry is old enough to know the crushing truth about his connection with Voldemort. Difficult as they are, Dumbledore’s revelations serve to restore the relationship of trust between them.

2. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince begins with Dumbledore bearing the sign of his total fallibility as a human father, his blackened cursed hand.17 We suspect he is just getting too old.
3. But in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows we discover that the fallibility runs far deeper than age.

He unexpectedly found the Resurrection Stone he had so craved as a misguided young wizard, plotting with Gellert Grindelwald. Desperately wanting to make up for his selfishness, he brought upon himself a fatal curse.18 As Dumbledore carries around a dead hand, he is quite aware that it is human failings that betray us in the end.

His lessons for Harry become more vital as he tries to teach Harry that Voldemort possesses the same vulnerability. Dumbledore’s fall from the pedestal is complete when Harry visits Severus Snape’s memories in Deathly Hallows, The memories bring us face to face with what always had to be true about the greatest wizard of his time.

Dumbledore is a man of power, for good and bad. Previously, we saw his best side. His admission of caring for Harry when he should have been more detached is endearing to Harry and the reader, but it is also revealing. The brilliant wizard Dumbledore is also a very shrewd tactician.

What Harry sees of Dumbledore from Severus Snape’s memories reveals a man who had laid a plan for defeating Voldemort using every weapon he possessed, even Harry’s life.19 Our beloved Dumbledore was never a kindly old man after all but an expert strategist, a skill known for its coldness not warmth.

Harry and the reader are appalled at how baldly manipulative he is. Even Snape protests.20 Yet Dumbledore is equally cold blooded in planning his own death.21 The coldly tactical plan he laid is what he means by admitting that caring too much about Harry as a person, as a son, was a weakness.

Dumbledore understands that this is war and that there truly is a “greater good.” This time, that greater good has specific people’s lives attached to it; Harry’s most of all. Dumbledore knows what Snape does not, that Harry as the last, best hope must be free of Voldemort in order to truly meet and defeat him.

Dumbledore gambles that he has guessed rightly how to get Harry to that moment. It is all the information Harry needs to proceed willingly to the forest and Voldemort.22 In the “King’s Cross” chapter in Deathly Hallows, Dumbledore, who has fallen so far from his pedestal, finally gets a chance to be perceived by Harry and the reader as he is, rather than how we want him to be.

1. Dumbledore is still a brilliant wizard, but we learn the meaning behind his plotting.23 We also see Dumbledore the man as we have never seen him before.
2. When Harry asks him to explain the Deathly Hallows, for the first time, Harry sees him worried and “fleetingly like a small boy caught in wrongdoing.” 24 For the first time, Dumbledore is not the one teaching and prompting Harry.

Instead, Dumbledore begs Harry’s forgiveness and confesses to Harry his selfishness and his vain desire for glory and power. Dumbledore’s assessment of himself is so scathing that Harry attempts to defend him against himself.25 The exchange between Harry and Dumbledore at King’s Cross is a bona fide adult father-and-son talk.

When Dumbledore weeps over his own failings, Harry reaches out for the first time to comfort him.26 Early in Deathly Hallows, Harry regrets not having asked Dumbledore more about himself before he died, but at King’s Cross, Harry finds that he knows more than he wants to know about his mentor and his past sins.27 This is the kind of experience children often have with their own parents.

With luck, children move from a sense of anger and betrayal at their parents’ fallibility to understanding and forgiveness. Finally, Dumbledore explains why Harry is the true master of the Hallows where Dumbledore himself failed.28 In the end, for all his scheming, Dumbledore was tripped up by the flaw in the plan.29 Many parents likewise dream that their children will succeed where they have failed.

• They hope the lessons they learned will permit their children to move forward.
• Dumbledore disarms us all again, not with his skill but with his humility and humanity.
• It is his last great lesson for Harry Potter.
• In his last scene with Dumbledore’s portrait, 30 Harry truly arrives at adulthood.
• Harry knows what to do with the Deathly Hallows.

He has learned to be wary of the power of the Elder Wand. As he discusses the Hallows with Dumbledore, he no longer wants to be told what to do; he just wants confirmation of his own judgment. Father and son have survived perils from without and from within.

Harry’s love and respect for his greatest mentor are still intact. When Harry reveals in the epilogue that he has named his second son Albus Severus after two headmasters of Hogwarts, the reader’s attention is on Severus Snape’s name.31 But it is also fitting that Albus Dumbledore should be part of Harry’s “family” line.

Dumbledore is the man from whom Harry has learned most about being a wizard and a human being. Throughout their six years together, Albus Dumbledore spends a great deal of his time teaching Harry about life in the way most parents do. He supports Harry’s own sense of compassion for people and self-giving.

He praises Harry’s good decisions and corrects him about his faulty ones. Always, he lifts up for Harry the power of love and the consequences of life without it. As he prepares Harry for Voldemort, Dumbledore demonstrates the most important lesson ‘ to defeat his enemy, Harry must understand him. Even Dumbledore’s confession of his failings serves as a life-lesson in truth and humility.

Dumbledore is a great wizard and the most important influence on Harry not because he is perfect, but because he is powerful and fallible, brilliant and loving, and above all human. Notes 1. Did Dumbledore see Grindelwald in the Mirror of Erised?

This post contains spoilers for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, In Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Jude Law stepped into the mysterious shoes of Professor Albus Dumbledore. The original Harry Potter series emphasized that the Boy Who Lived wasn’t as close to the enigmatic wizard as he thought he was, and the final book particularly focused on the family secrets Dumbledore kept to himself.

In a nod to the ambiguity constantly surrounding him, Dumbledore saw Grindelwald in the Mirror of Erised, and his vision contrasts with what his older self later saw. The Mirror of Erised is as classic as you can get in the Harry Potter fandom, first appearing in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone when Harry looked in the mirror and saw his deceased parents.

Dumbledore later informed him that the Mirror showcased one’s greatest desire, revealing that his own wish was a pair of woolen socks. Fitting with the secrecy Dumbledore maintained around Harry, author J.K. Rowling later revealed that, at that stage of his life, Dumbledore actually saw his own family, especially his dead sister Ariana.

Of course, your greatest wishes change as you grow, and as Crimes of Grindelwald confirmed, Dumbledore longed for something else in the sequel’s 1927 timeline. As seen in the film’s final trailer and elaborated in the movie, he desired his old relationship with Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) the most.

When looking in the Mirror, Dumbledore first saw his and Grindelwald’s younger selves agreeing to a blood oath, followed by an image of Grindelwald in the film’s present day. As Dumbledore admitted to Aurors trying to track down the evil wizard, the pair were once even closer than brothers.

Potterheads know that Dumbledore actually fell in love with Grindelwald, but the latter fighting with Dumbledore’s brother Aberforth inadvertently led to the death of the frail Ariana. According to Pottermore canon, Ariana died in 1899, more than 20 years before the events of Crimes of Grindelwald.

Perhaps 1927’s Dumbledore is still blinded enough by his feelings for Grindelwald to mourn what could have been. Seeing as the Fantastic Beasts franchise is meant to culminate with an epic duel between the two wizards, it looks like Dumbledore eventually has a change of heart about Grindelwald, but fans will have to wait awhile to see it.

1. With three more planned films and a likely time jump to reach the 1945 duel ahead of them, Rowling and her production team definitely aren’t skimming through this story.
2. The ending of Crimes of Grindelwald also set up a quest for the third film when Newt’s Niffler smuggled Grindelwald’s vial keeping the pair’s blood oath alive.

When Newt (Eddie Redmayne) presented the pendant to Dumbledore, the older man hinted he may be able to break the pact, thus allowing him to physically fight against Grindelwald. Well, it’s clear that he succeeded somehow, so here’s to finding out exactly how in an inexplicable amount of screen time.

While director David Yates received some flak for saying Dumbledore would not be “explicitly gay” in Crimes of Grindelwald, he has since hinted that future films will explore his teen romance with Grindelwald. We already caught a glimpse of teenage love in scenes of Leta Lestrange’s school days, but fingers crossed that the men’s lives in Godric’s Hollow earn their own flashbacks soon.

What did Ron see in the Mirror of Erised?

Analysis – Family has recently become important to Harry: being raised by the Dursleys, who barely mask their contempt for him, Harry barely understands how loving families interact. Recently, though, exposure to Ron and the Weasley family has given Harry some idea how these relationships work, and what having people care about him is like.

He is truly touched when Mrs. Weasley, knowing he would receive few, if any, gifts, sends him Christmas presents. Once again, Harry feels justified to ignore the rules, sneaking into the library’s restricted section under his Invisibility Cloak to search for information about Nicolas Flamel. Finding none and interrupted by Filch, he is inadvertently detoured into a room containing a magical mirror.

Rather than uncovering information about Flamel, Harry has instead discovered much more about himself. He is amazed and puzzled by the images reflected in the Mirror of Erised, seeing for the first time what his parents and other relatives were like in life.

Having lost James and Lily when he was still an infant, he has no recollections about them. Transfixed by his parents’ images, Harry continually returns to gaze at the mirror until Dumbledore finally intervenes. The kind Headmaster explains that rather than showing what someone’s outer self looks like, the mirror actually reflects what lies buried within, their deepest desires.

Erised is “desire” spelled backwards (thus mimicking the properties of a mirror). What Harry desires is a loving family life, his lost mother and father restored to him. Although this loss has created a huge void in his life, it is blank, containing no memories or images to draw upon.

Now Harry can begin to fill that void somewhat as he learns more about his family and starts exploring his feelings and his place in the world. While dwelling on his loss does cause him pain and grief, it also creates love and yearning, showing that Harry’s emotional self is multi-faceted; his emotions alone never completely rule or control Harry, nor is his tragedy used as a reason to vent anger and hate at others.

Budding logic and intellect help temper his feelings, though, at this age, he is still driven by his impulses. Dumbledore’s timely intervention prevents Harry from endlessly dwelling on hopeless dreams and lost opportunities rather than actively living his life.

Already having the family that Harry lacks, Ron’s desires are obviously quite different. Feeling unremarkable and always overshadowed by his talented older brothers, when Ron peers into the Mirror, he sees only himself, as Quidditch captain and Head Boy, standing completely on his own accomplishments.

Unlike Harry, however, he does not feel compelled to continually return and stare at the Mirror’s reflection, partially fearing being caught, but also resigned to knowing what it is he wants while believing he can never attain it. Harry and Dumbledore’s relationship is also established here, as until now there has been little significant interaction between them since Dumbledore left baby Harry on the Dursleys’ door step ten years earlier.

1. Not only has Dumbledore remained distant in the story, but he has been portrayed as being rather enigmatic and eccentric.
2. Harry even considers that he might be a touch mad.
3. Dumbledore is truly an enigma, and even by wizard standards he seems odd.
4. It is doubtful that he has ever had much direct interaction with students, being a lofty and somewhat aloof authoritarian figure, and it has been unclear yet just what his role will be in the book.

He is, however, a kind, gentle, and humorous man, and rather than reprimand Harry, Dumbledore steps beyond his Headmaster role to gently guide the young boy with helpful, almost fatherly, advice, understanding that Harry’s needs are unique among the students.

Coupled with Snape’s recent leg injury and suspicious behaviour, Harry, Ron, and Hermione believe he is attempting to enter the trapdoor. During Harry’s first Quidditch match, his broomstick attempts to buck him off.

Snape’s strange behaviour during the match convinces Hermione he jinxed Harry’s broom. Harry receives an anonymous Christmas gift – his father’s invisibility cloak, Using it to explore the school, he discovers the Mirror of Erised, which shows what the viewer most desires.

Perhaps the Mirror shows a reformed Grindelwald who repents his mistakes and loves Dumbledore back. Grindelwald was probably the first person whom Dumbledore truly felt understood by. They were young, had similar interests, and were both very intellectual. Then again, perhaps a desire to conquer the world with Grindelwald at his side still lingers in Dumbledore. It’s clear that those summer months he spent with Grindelwald in his youth, discussing their theories about the Deathly Hallows and plotting wizarding domination “for the greater good” enthralled Dumbledore and gave him purpose. Either situation would explain Dumbledore’s reluctance to confront Grindelwald. Dumbledore’s great desire reflects his great fear. If he desires a reestablished relationship with a reformed Grindelwald, then he fears to confront the truth of Grindelwald’s dangerous and irredeemable character. The older Dumbledore was adamant that love is a person’s greatest strength – it was this belief that ultimately led to Voldemort’s downfall – but perhaps young Dumbledore hasn’t yet learned that lesson. Perhaps he is so afraid to stand up to Grindelwald because he still loves him and fears Grindelwald will use that love to destroy him.

1. Dumbledore’s love once blinded him to Grindelwald’s true nature and their relationship ended in Ariana’s death.
2. That the Mirror of Erised shows Grindelwald as Dumbledore’s “deepest, most desperate desire” must be the reason behind Dumbledore’s reluctance; he is afraid that his love for Grindelwald will blind him again and cost the world many more lives.

Dumbledore’s unwillingness to fight Grindelwald for almost two decades after the events of this film seems to indicate that the Mirror has a powerful hold on him. Dumbledore explains the mirror’s allure to Harry, possibly from personal experience. However, this mirror will give us neither knowledge or truth.

• It is the magnetism of the mirror’s image, the question of whether it is “real or even possible” to win Grindelwald back, and the fear of losing that possibility that must be holding Dumbledore back in Crimes of Grindelwald,

In order for him to confront and defeat Grindelwald, the illusion must be shattered; something must happen to convince Dumbledore that his love is a strength rather than a weakness. The Elder Wand gives its allegiance to the stronger of the two wizards who fight for it, and if there is anything we’ve learned from the Potter series, magic born of love is stronger than magic born of hatred. J.K. Rowling has confirmed that by the time Harry discovers the Mirror, Dumbledore sees his family, whole and healed, reflected as his deepest desire. He still wishes he could salvage his past, but he understands now that “it does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live” (SS 12).

Decades later, Albus Dumbledore is still a very sentimental man. He seems to look into the past and hold on to his memories quite often. Dumbledore owns a Pensieve, which he uses to revisit his memories. His eagerness to use the Resurrection Stone and see his family again ended in a curse that hastened his death.

All of these things point to how much importance Dumbledore puts on reflecting on the past to interpret the present and future. This makes Grindelwald’s appearance in the Mirror of Erised very significant no matter which way you look at it. • And he would rather not know.” As a mentor to the central character Harry Potter, “Dumbledore is a very wise man who knows that Harry is going to have to learn a few hard lessons to prepare him for what may be coming in his life.

The Mirror of Erised is as classic as you can get in the Harry Potter fandom, first appearing in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone when Harry looked in the mirror and saw his deceased parents.

Dumbledore later informed him that the Mirror showcased one’s greatest desire, revealing that his own wish was a pair of woolen socks. Fitting with the secrecy Dumbledore maintained around Harry, author J.K. Rowling later revealed that, at that stage of his life, Dumbledore actually saw his own family, especially his dead sister Ariana.

Of course, your greatest wishes change as you grow, and as Crimes of Grindelwald confirmed, Dumbledore longed for something else in the sequel’s 1927 timeline. As seen in the film’s final trailer and elaborated in the movie, he desired his old relationship with Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) the most.

When looking in the Mirror, Dumbledore first saw his and Grindelwald’s younger selves agreeing to a blood oath, followed by an image of Grindelwald in the film’s present day. As Dumbledore admitted to Aurors trying to track down the evil wizard, the pair were once even closer than brothers.

1. Potterheads know that Dumbledore actually fell in love with Grindelwald, but the latter fighting with Dumbledore’s brother Aberforth inadvertently led to the death of the frail Ariana.
2. According to Pottermore canon, Ariana died in 1899, more than 20 years before the events of Crimes of Grindelwald.

Perhaps 1927’s Dumbledore is still blinded enough by his feelings for Grindelwald to mourn what could have been. Seeing as the Fantastic Beasts franchise is meant to culminate with an epic duel between the two wizards, it looks like Dumbledore eventually has a change of heart about Grindelwald, but fans will have to wait awhile to see it.

1. With three more planned films and a likely time jump to reach the 1945 duel ahead of them, Rowling and her production team definitely aren’t skimming through this story.
2. The ending of Crimes of Grindelwald also set up a quest for the third film when Newt’s Niffler smuggled Grindelwald’s vial keeping the pair’s blood oath alive.

When Newt (Eddie Redmayne) presented the pendant to Dumbledore, the older man hinted he may be able to break the pact, thus allowing him to physically fight against Grindelwald. Well, it’s clear that he succeeded somehow, so here’s to finding out exactly how in an inexplicable amount of screen time.

While director David Yates received some flak for saying Dumbledore would not be “explicitly gay” in Crimes of Grindelwald, he has since hinted that future films will explore his teen romance with Grindelwald. We already caught a glimpse of teenage love in scenes of Leta Lestrange’s school days, but fingers crossed that the men’s lives in Godric’s Hollow earn their own flashbacks soon.

Did Dumbledore ever find out who killed Ariana?

Ariana’s brother Albus with his friend Gellert Grindelwald At some point after Albus became Ariana’s guardian, Gellert Grindelwald came to Godric’s Hollow to stay with his aunt, Bathilda Bagshot, having been kicked out of Durmstrang Institute for his extreme experiments with the Dark Arts ; even the school of Dark Arts could not turn a blind eye to his twisted experiments.

• Grindelwald also had a bad history in his country of violence but Albus ignored that.
• Albus and Gellert quickly became friends, as they were both extraordinarily talented and very ambitious.
• Some say Albus even took a special fancying to Grindelwald.
• The two formed a plan to take over the wizarding world and make Muggles subservient “for the greater good”.

Aberforth confronted them over these plans, pointing out that Ariana was in no state to be dragged along with them as they pursued their plans. Grindelwald became furious, insisting that once they subdued the Muggles, there’d be no need for Ariana to be hidden, and a three-way duel broke out between him, Albus, and Aberforth.

Was Ariana Dumbledore Obscurus?

Magical abilities and skills –

• Underage magic : Ariana was capable of performing underage magic when she was six years old. However after being attacked by the Mould-on-the-Wold boys for witnessing her perform magic, she lost control of her magic, which became extremely dangerous and unstable, with her becoming an Obscurial,
• Obscurial : Ariana became an Obscurial after suffering extreme emotional trauma, which resulted in her developing a dark, parasitic energy which was known as an Obscurus, This power was extremely volatile and dangerous, which killed her mother Kendra in an uncontrolled explosion.

What did Dumbledore tell Harry about Ariana?

What happened to Ariana Dumbledore? – Dumbledore’s younger sister was abused by a bunch of muggle kids when she was just six years old. The ordeal caused her to become emotionally and magically unstable. Albus’ father took vengeance on the kids who hurt Ariana, landing him in Azkaban.

Albus’ mother Kendra kept Ariana at home, out of view from the magical community, sparking rumors that she was a squib, and that Kendra was ashamed of her. In Deathly Hallows, Dumbledore explains to Harry that the real reason Ariana was kept hidden was because they feared she’d be seen as a threat to the International Statute of Secrecy and shipped off to St.

Mungo’s. So, Ariana was kept hidden away, and at fourteen, one of her outbursts resulted in her mother’s death. This, according to both Albus and Aberforth Dumbledore, though neither of them were there at the time. Dumbledore’s issues with the International Statute of Secrecy stemmed from the tragedy surrounding his sister.

And that proved to be a binding ingredient in the friendship he quickly formed with Grindelwald not long after his mother died. Grindelwald wanted to live in a world where wizards were dominant over muggles. Dumbledore wanted to live in a world where his sister didn’t have to live in hiding. And probably a world where she wouldn’t have been abused by those muggles in the first place.

A few months after Kendra died, Ariana was killed in the crossfire of a three-way fight between Albus Dumbledore, his brother Aberforth and Gellert Grindelwald. So it seems very possible that what Aberforth describes (in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ) as Ariana’s “rages” were the same kind of outbursts we saw from Credence.

• But let’s poke at this theory a bit and see how well it holds up.
• Ariana and Credence don’t have the same background, but there are some significant common threads.
• Ariana was raised in a loving family environment, unlike Credence, who was abused by his adoptive mother, and raised to believe that magic is evil.

The implication in Fantastic Beasts is that this mistreatment led him to stifle his magical abilities, and between that and not being trained at all, Credence became (or produced?) an Obscurus. In Ariana’s case, the abuse she suffered at the hands of the muggle kids left her emotionally scarred, magically unstable and prone to outbursts or “rages.” Did these outbursts manifest in the form of an Obscurus? What little we know about her outbursts wouldn’t rule that out, especially when we consider that one of them resulted in her mother’s death, when Ariana was just fourteen. It seems clear that Gellert Grindelwald is in New York looking for an Obscurus. That situation is more and more apparent when you take into account Graves’ behavior and appearances throughout the film. We first see GrindelGraves investigating a scene where something described as a dark wind recently tore through a building.

1. Graves is clearly looking into the situation.
2. We’re meant to believe it’s because he’s there on behalf of MACUSA, but in retrospect, it seems just as likely that his investigation of that scene ties in with his relationship with Credence.
3. He’s looking for the troubled kid.
4. And, of course, he’s barely able to contain his interest in Obscurus when he discovers one contained in Newt’s case, which is another big giveaway.

So, it’s evident Grindelwald has an interest in Obscurus, which may or may not stem from his connection with Ariana Grindelwald years ago. But Ariana Dumbledore was fourteen when she was killed. Assuming Grindelwald knew (or learned) what she was, wouldn’t he have known that a child could be in their teens and still be an Obscurus? And if that’s the case, why was he so quick to dismiss the idea that Credence is an Obscurus? It’s a technicality that could be overlooked, I suppose.

Credence is clearly older than fourteen, though I’m not sure exactly how old he’s supposed to be ( Ezra Miller is in his early twenties). And I’m kind of inclined to tentatively give Grindelwald a pass for overlooking Credence, even if he might have known better. unless/until J.K. Rowling rules this Ariana Obscurus theory out.

In the meantime, the connection between Grindelwald and Dumbledore is too relevant not to consider Ariana and the circumstances surrounding her life and death as potentially a major factor in this series. That brings us to the last point that should be brought up concerning Ariana Dumbledore.
