Aerial shot of the building. The Los Robles Apartment Building, or simply The Building, refers to the apartment building located at 2311 North Los Robles Avenue, Pasadena, California that serves as the residence of Leonard Hofstadter and Sheldon Cooper,

  • When viewed from the satellite photographs ( The Countdown Reflection ), it appears to be in reality located at 215 South Madison Avenue.
  • Leonard, Sheldon, and Penny occupy apartments on the fourth floor.
  • Adjacent to a lamp store, it is located about a block from Pasadena City Hall, which is visible through Sheldon and Leonard’s window.

The building is also located near a Chevron Station on Colorado Boulevard, because Leonard makes the excuse that he uses its bathroom when he and Penny began seeing each other for the second time in Season 5, The apartment building has at least five floors and sixteen apartments (based on the number of mailboxes) which suggests there are two more unseen apartments per floor or the structure is connected to an adjacent building.

The Elevator had been broken for several years (predating Penny’s arrival to the building) after it was damaged by one of Leonard’s experiments involving rocket fuel, as explained in ” The Staircase Implementation “, causing everyone to take The Stairs, but it was finally restored around 2019. The building also contains a laundry room in the basement, the layout of which is given to much speculation.

Sheldon was once down here to switch the building’s power off to suit his own ego before Leonard and Penny. ( The Friendship Contraction ) In season 10 Sheldon and Amy moved into Penny’s old apartment #4B adding her to the building’s occupants. The lease for 4A was in her name.

Regardless, Penny’s last name changed from “Teller” to “Hofstadter” towards the end of the series when she and Leonard got married. What’s curious with this incredible spot is whether The Big Bang Theory producers even remember including this detail back in season 2 (and forgetting the name would be on-brand given that Penny seemed to forget her own dad’s name in TBBT ‘s early seasons).

At that point, though, the show was still starting to find its groove and build its fan base. When asked repeatedly, people involved in the show either claimed that Penny’s last name was a secret or that they didn’t have anything set in stone.

In season 10, Sheldon moves across the hall with his girlfriend Amy Farrah Fowler ( Mayim Bialik ), in the former apartment of Leonard’s wife Penny ( Kaley Cuoco ). He has a genius-level IQ of 187. In The Big Bang Theory, it is said that his and Leonard’s IQs add up to 360, and Leonard says his is 173.

In Young Sheldon, his mother says that he has the same IQ as Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking, though neither is known to have taken an IQ test. However, he displays a fundamental lack of social skills, a tenuous understanding of humor, and difficulty recognizing irony and sarcasm in other people, although he himself often employs them.

He exhibits highly idiosyncratic behavior and a general lack of humility, empathy, and toleration, These characteristics provide the majority of the humor involving him, which are credited with making him the show’s breakout character, Some viewers have asserted that Sheldon’s personality is consistent with autism spectrum disorder (or what used to be classified as Asperger’s Syndrome ).

Is Sheldon Cooper asexual?

The asexual community feels strongly about this aspect of Sheldon’s character – What City Does Big Bang Theory Take Place In CBS Chuck Lorre himself made it abundantly clear that Sheldon’s asexuality was very important to him while it was still an element of his character. Be that as it may, if one were to survey “Big Bang Theory” viewers — specifically those in the asexual community — a good portion of them wouldn’t have a lot of positive remarks on the topic.

For instance, back in 2017, Chloé Osmond of The Mary Sue detailed just how poorly the show had done with its depiction of his asexuality, from its reinforcement of the false notion that it can be “cured” if he finds the right person to its overall understanding of what it means to be asexual. Meanwhile, folks in a thread by a now-deleted user in the r/Asexual subreddit had other thoughts on Sheldon’s asexuality.

Suffice it to say, they were equally disappointed and didn’t hold back with their critiques of the “Big Bang Theory” team. Among similar issues to those brought up by Osmond, quite a few community members called out Sheldon’s characterization as actively harmful,

Additionally, u/SaltArmadillo2739 brought up Sheldon’s implied autism, which they feel “The Big Bang Theory” handles comparatively as badly as his asexuality. How “The Big Bang Theory” ultimately handled Sheldon’s asexuality is confusing, to say the least, but what’s done is done. The series is long over, and as far as viewers are concerned, he has gone on to live a happy life with Amy and their son Leonard.

One can only hope that asexual representation in mainstream sitcoms will improve in the years ahead.

  • She has an IQ of around 110 and Sheldon would hate to admit it, but Penny is far from being dumb.

Sheldon respects her, thanks to her straightforwardness and logical thinking. Howard is an engineer and is no doubt a genius. He went to space and studied at one of the best colleges in the world. Howard has an IQ of 140. He also likes building robots for fun.

Did Sheldon go to Harvard?

Early life – What City Does Big Bang Theory Take Place In Sheldon at age 9, in 1989 Sheldon was born alongside his twin sister Missy on February 26, 1980, in a Kmart in Galveston, Texas to the late George Cooper, Sr. and Mary Cooper and was officiated at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He has an older brother named George Cooper, Jr.

Who, along with Missy, is described by their mother to be “dumb as soup.” Sheldon was raised according to his mother’s Evangelical Christian doctrines, (i.e., learning how to pray and becoming the co-captain of the East Texan Christian Youth Holy Roller Bowling League Championship team and seven-to-twelve year-old division).

Meanwhile, he was forced to watch football by his father. Like any typical nerd, Sheldon was bullied a lot during his childhood, mostly because he constantly expressed intellectual superiority to his peers as he still does now. The bullying consisted of, but was not limited to, being beaten up, getting wedgies and having his personal belongings stolen.

This is further accentuated when he tells Amy Farrah Fowler that the memories of his upbringing were tantamount to that of an insufferably tantalizing “hell.” Further anecdotes also reveal that he built a so-called “Sonic Death Ray” that failed even to slow down the neighbor kids (all it did was annoy their dog), and constructed an armed robot using integrated circuits from ceramic semiconductor substrates cooked in Missy’s modified Easy-Bake Oven, to defend his room from Missy (whose eyebrows were burned off as a result of a malfunction).

Sheldon was also beaten up by his brother and sister, with Missy usually kicking Sheldon in his crotch. When Sheldon was five years old, his Pop-Pop died. Sheldon missed him and wanted him back and asked Santa to bring him back, but it didn’t happen and this soured Sheldon so much that he disliked Christmas altogether.

  • Since the age of 9, he had been dreaming about going to the Large Hadron Collider.
  • In ” The Large Hadron Collision ” (S3E15), he voiced those dreams.) Sheldon formerly despised birthday parties because he shared his birthday with his twin sister.
  • Missy and her childhood friends tricked Sheldon that Batman was coming and he waited the whole afternoon at the door and all that came was a robin that flew in the window.

He never wanted one after that, until his friends threw him an enjoyable birthday party in ” The Celebration Experimentation,” As a kid, Sheldon wrote a paper entitled “A Proof That Algebraic Topology Can Never Have A Non-Self-Contradictory Set Of Abelian Groups” and his grade school science project paper, with the original title “A Rederivation of Maxwell’s Equations Regarding Electromagnetism,” contains an approach that may change the way how ferromagnetic hysteresis is calculated.

Despite his misgivings about being called a ‘rocket scientist’ as an adult, at nine years old, the boy genius wrote “Rocket Reentry & Retropropulsion” in a composition notebook; this provides the solution to the VTVL problem discreetly employed by Elon Musk years later for his successful SpaceX CRS-8 mission.

While Sheldon audited Dr. John Sturgis ‘ quantum chromodynamics course at East Texas Tech at 9, as Medford High School no longer academically challenged him, Sheldon formally entered college at 11. At 12, filled with disappointment at not receiving a titanium centrifuge to separate radioactive isotopes, he had to be flown to a hospital by helicopter to be treated for radiation burns following a mishap when he built a CAT scanner, which also resulted in the death of his sister’s guinea pig, “Snowball.” He also, at this time, conducted experiments involving the height of stairs only to deduce that if a step on a staircase is two millimeters off or more, a person is likely to trip – his findings are evidenced by his father breaking his clavicle.

When Sheldon was 13, he attempted to build a nuclear reactor in order to provide free electricity for his town, but it failed after a government agent informed him that it was illegal to store “yellowcake” uranium inside a shed; he then erupted as a result. During that same year, he walked in on his father having sex with a woman who was not his wife, and he never said anything about it to Sheldon, and Sheldon decided to start knocking three times to prevent walking in on anything like that again.

When Sheldon was fourteen years old, he graduated college East Texas Tech summa cum laude, began graduate school at the California Institute of Technology, and was the youngest person at the time to receive the Stevenson Award at “fourteen and a half.” He received his first doctorate at the age of sixteen, and he then spent four years on his second dissertation before obtaining his current position.

  1. In 1995, his father died due to weight problems.
  2. In ” The Pancake Batter Anomaly ” (S1E11), Sheldon said, at the age of 15, he got sick in Germany, and his mother had to fly back to Texas to help his dad at that time.
  3. This creates a continuity error in the episodes ” The Thanksgiving Decoupling ” (S7E9) and ” The Proton Transmogrification ” (S7E22) because Sheldon mentions to Bernadette’s father Mike and to the ghost of Professor Proton, respectively, that his father died when he was 14.

When Sheldon graduated from college at 14, he got accepted into Caltech. Though he was planning to move in together with Tam, Tam found a girlfriend and decided to stay in Texas instead. This explains Sheldon not having spoken to Tam for a long time. It’s unknown when he moved into The Los Robles Apartment Building with Sebastian before he drove him out, and he met Stuart Bloom and the comic book store. Apartment 4A is located on the fourth floor of the building across the hall from Apartment 4B, where Penny lived and where Sheldon and Amy live now.

Apartment 4A is known to be a corner apartment, being that it has windows facing outside on two sides. It may, in fact, be one of only two apartments on the floor, and may therefore have outside walls on all sides (other than the wall shared with the fourth floor hall and stairwell,

  • The mailboxes in the lobby, however, indicate there are four units per floor, with only four floors in the building.
  • The presence of unit 5A in season 2 however makes the mailboxes make absolutely no sense.
  • Apartment 4A is also a hidden Easter egg (apt 4A = foray) – either a “great raid” or the voice of Rocky the Flying Squirrel and Karen from Frosty the Snowman, June Foray.

Did Raj reveal the gender of the baby?

What City Does Big Bang Theory Take Place In Melissa Rauch as Bernadette, Simon Helberg as Howard. Photo: Monty Brinton/CBS There’s a birth day and a birthday happening with the Pasadena gang, and while one is obviously a bigger deal in the grand scheme of things, I have to admit that the adult birthday proves to be a lot more fun.

Emphasis on adult part. When we last saw the very pregnant Bernadette, she had gone into labor and was being rushed to the hospital by her husband (Howard), his best friend (Raj), and their weird pseudo friend (Stuart) who now lives with them. It’s no wonder the admitting nurse is confused by the birth party — she asks if Bernie knows who the father is, or if this is a ” Mamma Mia! situation” — nor does she recommend a home birth after telling them to leave and come back when Bernie’s contractions are closer together.

In the meantime, news of Baby Wolowitz’s impending delivery has reached Shamy, halting a birthday celebration that began with Sheldon waking Amy up at midnight to give her a gift. It’s a functional MRI of his brain, right after he did a Sudoku puzzle, so it’s “ripped.” She loves the unusual yet thoughtful present, especially after Sheldon points out that his orbital frontal cortex is lit up on the MRI because he was thinking of her at the time.

  1. Sheldon Lee Cooper, you sweet talker.
  2. It is also Sheldon who reminds Amy that her birthday means it’s time for their annual — and remember, it has so far been limited to that — coitus, which, again, unusual, but given how far forward Sheldon has moved on this topic, it’s also thoughtful and romantic.

Or it was, until Penny and Leonard knock on Shamy’s door to tell them they need to head to the hospital to be with the Wolowitzes. And Raj and Stuart. “Childbirth, looming coitus it’s a banner night for female genitals,” Sheldon says. As Shamy and Lenny prepare to go, they get the call about a false alarm, and Shamy heads back to the bedroom to resume their coitus sequel.

The interruption has messed with their flow, though, so Amy tries to jump-start the passion with a surprise: She visited the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and purchased costumes. She models one for Sheldon, gives him a Gryffindor robe of his own, and after he stops pouting about the fact that she visited the Wizarding World of Harry Potter without him, they get their groove back.

Until Raj comes knocking on their door. He accidentally revealed the sex of Baby Wolowitz — I’m about to do it on purpose: It’s a girl! — so Bernie and Howard kicked him out of the house. Leonard and Penny also booted him from their apartment, and when he tries Amy and Sheldon for a place to hang out, Amy slams the door in his face so she and Sheldon can resume their Potter friskiness.

  1. That’s when Penny informs them Bernie is really, truly, honestly in labor this time, and they once again put the brakes on coitus and rush off to the hospital.
  2. The birth details of Halley Wolowitz — yep, that’s her name — are pretty simple, as the writers wisely skipped an actual delivery-room scene, since that’s been done a zillion times.

Instead, Halley’s birth doubles as a remembrance of Howard’s mama (and the late, great actress Carol Ann Susi, who played the character). Howard and Bernie discuss Mrs. Wolowitz while mulling over options for the baby’s name, and when the rest of the gang goes to see Halley for the first time in the hospital nursery, they can’t identify her until one newborn lets out a wail that sounds just like Mama Wolowitz.

  1. As for Shamy’s coitus quest, after Halley’s birth, they spent the rest of the day at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
  2. They arrive home carrying bags of merch and wearing even more, and as Sheldon points his wand at Amy — his Harry Potter collectible wand, you potty brains — he tells her it’s time for “Hankius Pankius.” She’s amazed he still has that much energy left.

“Amy! I just saw a magic train and reported somebody for cutting the line,” Sheldon says. “If that’s not foreplay, I don’t know what is.” THEOR -EMS:

As is totally fitting, Raj is named Halley’s godfather. Touching Scotch tape gives Sheldon the “heebie-jeebies,” which is why Amy gets her presents in bags instead of gift wrap. She promises to remember this is one of — one of — the things Sheldon is afraid to touch, along with peaches and felt. Amy, on Halley’s birth coinciding with her birthday and interrupting her celebration with Sheldon: “I thought this baby was supposed to ruin their sex life, not mine.” Sheldon, when Amy asks if he’s sure he wants to have sex again: “I didn’t put on my come-hither plaid PJs for nothing.” Sheldon is finally as smitten with Amy as she is with him. She apologizes for the fact that her nose makes a little whistling sound when she breathes, but he tells her not to worry. She’s like a “foxy tea kettle.” Sheldon, when he and Amy try to rekindle their passion after one of many interruptions: “It’s feeling forced like all the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels.” Sheldon’s definitely a more romantic, giving boyfriend than he was during the early years of his relationship with Amy, and he continues to evolve. But lest we think that evolution has gone too far, he leaves no doubt there’s plenty of the old Sheldon left. After deciding not to ruin Amy’s birthday by throwing a hissy fit about her solo visit to the Wizarding World, he admits, “I’ll wait, and ruin 24 individual hours sprinkled throughout the year.” Yep, a real sweet talker.

Sheldon Cooper, The Big Bang Theory’s Big Misstep Knock knock knock, representation! Since the scientist-centered sitcom The Big Bang Theory launched in 2007, Sheldon Cooper has become the poster boy for adult autism among the general public. I admit, I used to be a fan of the show for its references to Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and other geeky things I was interested in, but now that my autism representation goggles seem to be fused to my face (/fig), my attitude towards Big Bang is much less positive.

  1. Given his status as the go-to example of autism in pop culture (except for Rain Man, but that is another post) and his multitude of stereotypical characteristics, it may surprise you to learn that Sheldon is never labeled as autistic on the show or in commentary by the creators.
  2. Yes, you read that right, Sheldon is technically a headcanon, a Type 2 autism representation.

So, why does everyone compare autistic adults back to this character, and why does that make me so angry? If I had to choose one word to describe Sheldon Cooper, it would be “stereotypical”. Sheldon is a physicist who started university when he was eleven years old, has a thing for trains, despises physical contact including sex, can do complex calculations in his head, is up to his eyeballs in classic nerd culture bits such as sci-fi, and has certain repetitive behaviors that he has to do or else his brain gets itchy (like the knocking I referenced at the beginning of the post).

He is basically what the writers pictured a probably autistic savant prodigy child to act like as an adult. He is very particular about what he eats on which days, where he sits on the couch, and even when he goes to the toilet, which is an extreme version of the reliance on routine that autistic people have.

He is described as having “Vulcan hearing” and a “sensitive butt”, indicating a heightened sensory profile, but he is not seen stimming or doing much to accommodate his sensory differences, other than complaining. Sheldon is aloof and removed from his peers because he believes his 187 IQ makes him superior, and certain nuances of communication confuse or annoy him.

  1. He hates small talk, and sarcasm goes right over his head.
  2. He has the common comorbidity synesthesia, a condition that cross-wires one’s senses, making Sheldon able to assign colors and smells to numbers.
  3. His autobiographical memory is very strong, which some autistic people can relate to, but not all.

Sheldon even has absolute pitch, to the point where he can recognize that Leonard’s nose whistles in E-flat. (This trait in particular makes no sense to me because although the likelihood of developing absolute pitch is higher in autistic people, it is more connected to whether someone had exposure to complex music as a baby, and Sheldon is not a musical person, with the exception of that episode where he played the bongos).

Sheldon has what could be recognized as autism traits, but it seems like the shows play them for laughs or plot convenience or otherwise miss the point. His sensory issues are there to make him seem quirky so his friends can roll their eyes and the laugh track can roll. His strict routines and particularities drive the plot forward as he and the rest of the cast come up with ways to work around them or face consequences when they are disrupted.

There is this whole air of “look at this super smart guy who has all these particulars because he’s smart, isn’t that hilarious?” All of Sheldon’s traits are treated as precious and incredibly singular, and Sheldon himself is treated as superior, despite the other cast members being more capable than he is in multiple aspects of life.

No one ever looks into why he can hear people whispering about him two rooms away but is totally deaf to sarcasm; it is always written off as something only Sheldon does and nobody is allowed to question it. Speaking of Sheldon’s relationship with the rest of the characters, the way they treat him is rather problematic.

Sheldon is, when you get down to it, an unpleasant man with the attitude of a seven-year-old, throwing hissy fits when people do not cater to his every specific whim and lording his intelligence over the other scientists. He also has a childish view on sex and relationships.

  • Leonard and Penny even discuss Sheldon as if he is a kid and they are his parents who have to take care of him.
  • He is seldom called out for his behavior or asked to adjust for the needs of others, which enables his self-centeredness and never allows him to grow and progress.
  • Real autistic people are often told they are being rude when they are unaware of it, and unless they are uncaring brats, they try to learn from their mistakes.

I also find it incredibly hard to believe that Sheldon has been friends with the others for years and still has no idea when they are being sarcastic or non-literal. Myself and a ton of other autistic people I know have described being able to read their friends and family because those people are close to them, but strangers are still hard to figure out.

  • Instead of helping Sheldon learn and treating him like another adult, the other characters treat him like a spoiled child, and that is what his personality reflects.
  • Big Bang ‘s greatest crime is how the writers chose to handle diagnosis and labels.
  • When people ask what is “wrong” with Sheldon on the show, the response is that no one is sure.

(There is nothing wrong with actual autistic people, by the way, but that is beside the point). I find it extremely hard to believe that this cishet, middle class white boy with incredibly stereotypical characteristics including a special interest in trains walked into the evaluation room and came away inconclusive.

  • There are people of color, low-income people, AFAB people who do not even make it to an evaluation, let alone walk away with the right diagnosis, because of bias within the medical and psychiatric fields.
  • And we cannot forget every autistic person who is not a savant or prodigy, who has lasers that are not related to math, science, or trains, and who mask their traits because the world has taught them that their way of being a person is unacceptable even when they have caused no harm.

Sheldon Cooper is not the face of inconclusiveness, and as someone who actually used to be inconclusive, I find the handling of Sheldon’s autism, or lack thereof, hurtful, insensitive, and invalidating. I have wanted to get this rant review out for some time now, and I hope all of you appreciate it too.

Is Sam from atypical actually autistic?

Are the Actors in Atypical Actually Autistic? – Keir Gilchrist, the actor who plays Sam in Atypical, is not on the spectrum. However, there are other cast members that are. In part of the show, Sam has a peer support group that consists of 8 actors with autism. The writers introduced them into the show after the first season because they received criticism for a lack of autistic cast members.

Does Leonard have Asperger’s?

The Big Bang Theory: 10 Things You Completely Missed From Season One Even though Sheldon Cooper has a gifted scientific mind, his intelligence fails him when it comes to certain rudimentary concepts. Time and time again, he’s struggled to understand emotion, empathy, romance, sex, hugging, and sarcasm.

He is also governed by a rigid set of rules and mannerisms which only make sense to him. On top of that, his social skills and ability to read a situation are borderline non-existent. Although the producers have denied that the character has an autism spectrum disorder, Jim Parsons admitted he portrayed the character as a person with Asperger’s syndrome.

What’s important in this entry though, is that his quirks are inconsistent, especially in the opening episodes. In the pilot, Sheldon has no problem understanding Leonard’s sarcastic comments. Despite the fact he’s known for referring to sex as “coitus”, Sheldon had no qualms using the “s” word in Season 1.
